TLDR: Uber India has initiated a pilot program across 12 cities, including major hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, to allow its driver partners to earn additional income by performing AI data labeling tasks directly through the Uber app. This initiative, spearheaded by Uber AI Solutions, aims to utilize drivers’ downtime productively and bring previously outsourced tasks in-house, potentially serving as a global model for driver engagement in the AI economy.
Ride-hailing giant Uber India has launched an innovative pilot program designed to integrate its vast network of driver partners into its artificial intelligence (AI) development efforts. The program, currently live across 12 Indian cities, including metropolitan areas such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, as well as smaller markets like Pune and Jaipur, offers drivers an alternative income stream by enabling them to complete digital tasks directly within the Uber app. This move marks a significant shift for Uber, as it aims to bring its AI data-labeling needs, traditionally outsourced to independent contractors, in-house.
Megha Yethadka, Global Head of Uber AI Solutions, emphasized the program’s core objective: “This pilot is about giving drivers more choice, flexibility, and ways to earn.” She highlighted that “Drivers can face downtime at certain times of the day, and digital tasks offer a way to make that time productive. Early engagement has been strong, with many thousands of tasks already completed.” Yethadka also expressed the company’s eagerness to scale this initiative further, citing promising early results.
The tasks available to driver partners are crucial for building and training robust AI models. These micro-tasks include labeling images, classifying short text, counting objects, and digitizing receipts. For instance, drivers might be asked to tag objects in photos or sort items priced above a certain value in a retail shopping invoice. This labeled data is vital for training AI systems to make accurate real-world predictions, such as identifying a stop sign for autonomous vehicles or understanding a customer’s request within the app.
Uber AI Solutions, the division behind this program, provides data labeling and product testing services to various global companies involved in AI, autonomous vehicles, and technology. The success of the India pilot could establish a template for similar programs in other international markets, thereby empowering Uber’s extensive network of drivers and delivery partners to play an active role in the burgeoning AI economy.

This initiative comes amidst a period of heightened competition in India’s ride-hailing sector, with companies like Ola Consumer, Rapido, and Namma Yatri vying for market share. Uber has been rolling out several new features, including options for lower fares with longer waiting times, metro ticket booking, and a forthcoming price lock feature for frequent routes. The AI task program further diversifies Uber’s offerings, providing its driver community with enhanced earning opportunities and fostering a more engaged ecosystem.
