TLDR: Tempus AI has acquired Paige, a digital pathology developer specializing in AI-powered cancer detection, for $81.25 million, primarily in Tempus common stock, and will assume Paige’s Microsoft Azure cloud services commitment. This strategic acquisition aims to significantly boost Tempus’s efforts in precision medicine and oncology by integrating Paige’s extensive generative AI experience and a dataset of nearly 7 million digitized pathology slides. Paige is recognized for developing the first FDA-cleared AI application in pathology, which aids in cancer diagnosis and treatment planning.
Tempus AI, a leading technology company focused on advancing precision medicine through artificial intelligence, announced on August 22, 2025, the acquisition of Paige, an AI company specializing in digital pathology. The deal, valued at $81.25 million, will be predominantly paid in Tempus common stock, with Tempus also assuming Paige’s existing commitment to Microsoft Azure for its cloud-computing services. This acquisition is poised to significantly enhance Tempus’s capabilities in oncology research and precision medicine.
Paige, founded in 2017, has been a pioneer in the field of digital pathology, developing and deploying several AI applications. Notably, the company created the first FDA-cleared AI application in pathology, which assists researchers and pathologists in detecting cancer more effectively, thereby enabling more precise and informed treatment decisions for care teams. Paige’s innovative work is underpinned by a vast, anonymized dataset comprising nearly 7 million digitized pathology slide images, along with associated clinical and molecular data, all stripped of patient identifiers to ensure privacy.
Eric Lefkofsky, Founder and CEO of Tempus, emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition. “As we embark upon building the largest foundation model that’s ever been built in oncology, the acquisition of Paige substantially accelerates our efforts,” he stated. Lefkofsky further highlighted Paige’s leadership in digital pathology and its comprehensive dataset, which he believes, along with the Paige team’s deep generative AI experience, will be “catalytic across all of our AI efforts.”
Earlier this year, Tempus had already announced a $200 million collaboration with AstraZeneca and Pathos AI, aimed at building its own multi-modal model for cancer research. The integration of Paige’s technology and data is expected to provide a substantial boost to this ambitious project, contributing to the development of a large foundation model in oncology.
Razik Yousfi, CEO and CTO of Paige, echoed the enthusiasm for the merger. “We’ve always believed that the future of cancer care and precision medicine lies in harnessing the full potential of AI to redefine what’s possible in digital pathology and transform how cancer is detected, understood, and treated,” Yousfi commented. He added that joining forces with Tempus will allow Paige to bring its innovations to a broader patient population and deliver greater impact, confident that the partnership will maximize and expand the reach of their technology.

Paige’s recent advancements include the PRISM2 AI, unveiled last month, which is designed to help large-language models better interpret pathology images by correlating visual patterns in tissue samples with clinical descriptions. Developed in collaboration with Microsoft Research, PRISM2 AI is intended to support diverse applications in clinical practice and R&D, including drug development, diagnostic biomarkers, and predicting patient outcomes. This acquisition solidifies Tempus’s position at the forefront of AI-driven precision oncology.
