TLDR: Databricks has announced its acquisition of Tecton, a machine learning startup, to significantly enhance its AI agent offerings and provide comprehensive AI building tools for enterprise clients. The move is expected to bolster Databricks’ Agent Bricks platform, improving AI workflow automation and response times.
Databricks, a leader in data and AI, has confirmed its intent to acquire Tecton, a prominent machine learning startup backed by venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins. This strategic acquisition, announced on August 23, 2025, is poised to strengthen Databricks’ position in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape, particularly in delivering full-scale AI building tools for its enterprise customer base.
According to Databricks CEO and co-founder Ali Ghodsi, the integration of Tecton’s technology and talent is expected to significantly enhance Databricks’ flagship product, Agent Bricks. Agent Bricks is designed to enable enterprises to construct and automate workflows using AI agents. Ghodsi emphasized that Tecton’s contributions would be crucial in improving response times within AI applications, a critical factor for companies developing interactive services.
Tecton’s founders, Mike del Baso and Kevin Stumpf, previously played key roles in building Uber’s Michelangelo Machine Learning Platform, giving them firsthand experience in operationalizing machine learning at scale. This expertise aligns perfectly with Databricks’ mission to simplify and democratize data and AI, making Tecton’s products, which focus on making AI and machine learning more accessible, a natural fit.
The acquisition is not a standalone event but rather a continuation of Databricks’ aggressive expansion strategy. The company has been on an acquisition spree, fueled by its soaring valuation, which recently surpassed $100 billion following a new funding round. Earlier in 2025, Databricks acquired BladeBridge to enhance AI-driven data warehouse migration and Neon, a Postgres-based AI-powered database startup. Previous notable acquisitions include Tabular (2024) for open lakehouse interoperability, Einblick (2024) for natural language data analysis, and in 2023, Arcion for data ingestion, MosaicML for generative AI, and Okera for AI-focused data governance.

Databricks and Tecton have a history of collaboration, with Databricks Ventures having invested in Tecton in 2022, alongside a deeper partnership that saw Tecton integrating with the Databricks Lakehouse Platform. Many of Tecton’s existing clients, including Coinbase, are already Databricks users, suggesting that this acquisition will further solidify relationships with shared customers and streamline the development of production-ready ML features.
