TLDR: YouTube has emerged as the leading platform for AI chatbot referrals, significantly outpacing competitors like Facebook, Wikipedia, and Reddit. While Google is still catching up in the overall chatbot market, YouTube’s strong performance in driving traffic from AI models positions it as a key player in the evolving AI landscape. Other platforms and news brands are actively working to increase their share of AI-driven traffic.
YouTube currently stands as the undisputed leader in generating traffic from AI chatbots, according to recent data. The platform received an impressive 37.1 million visits from large language models (LLMs) in May, based on an analysis of 1.3 billion chatbot-driven visits. This dominance highlights YouTube’s value to both AI models and users seeking information through these new interfaces.
Following YouTube, other prominent platforms are also seeing significant AI-driven referrals. Facebook ranks second with 10.9 million referrals, though a majority of this traffic is directed towards business pages rather than personal profiles. Wikipedia, despite being a primary source for training AI models, secured third place with 10.1 million referrals, indicating some reciprocal traffic. Reddit is close behind with 9.6 million chatbot referrals, leveraging its vast archive of discussions as a valuable resource for AI.
Among news organizations, The Guardian leads with 1.7 million chatbot referrals, followed by Reuters. However, their numbers remain considerably smaller compared to the major platforms.
This trend reveals an interesting dynamic in the AI race. While Google continues to play catch-up in the broader chatbot market, with ChatGPT accounting for nearly 80 percent of global referral traffic, YouTube’s strong performance means that even Google’s rivals are inadvertently directing millions of users back to Google’s ecosystem. Experts suggest that Google’s active promotion of AI-powered campaign types like Performance Max and Demand Gen, which utilize YouTube inventory, will further solidify its position in AI-powered advertising and boost ad revenue. This revenue can then be reinvested into improving Google’s own AI models, such as Gemini, to directly compete with ChatGPT and other LLMs.

Despite the growth in AI chatbot referrals, traditional search engines remain the primary method for users to find information. Data from between April 2024 and March 2025 indicates that search engines received 34 times more traffic than LLM chatbots. However, the click-through rate for AI chatbots is currently around 0.33%, significantly lower than Google search’s 8.63%. This suggests that while chatbots are a growing source of referrals, there is still considerable room for improvement in their ability to drive direct user engagement. The potential for concise and useful YouTube videos to encourage user clicks from AI-generated answers offers a practical strategy for brands to maintain visibility within this evolving information landscape.
