Prime Video Elevates User Experience with Generative AI Innovations on AWS

TLDR: Prime Video is leveraging generative AI on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to significantly enhance its user experience. The streaming giant is implementing AI across five key areas: personalized content recommendations, advanced X-Ray Recaps, deeper sports insights, improved content accessibility through Dialogue Boost, and enhanced video understanding for asset management. These innovations aim to provide a more intuitive, engaging, and accessible viewing platform for subscribers.

Prime Video is at the forefront of integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the streaming experience for its global subscriber base. The company has detailed its extensive use of generative AI solutions, primarily powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its Amazon Bedrock service, to deliver a more personalized, accessible, and insightful platform.

At the core of Prime Video’s AI strategy are five distinct enhancements designed to optimize user engagement and content consumption:

1. Personalized Content Recommendations: To combat the paradox of choice and ensure viewers spend more time watching than searching, Prime Video is deploying AI-powered personalized content recommendations. These recommendations are prominently featured on ‘Movies’ and ‘TV shows’ landing pages, presenting users with curated collections based on their individual interests and viewing history. This intelligent curation aims to streamline content discovery and enhance viewer satisfaction.

2. X-Ray Recaps: Building upon its existing X-Ray features, Prime Video has introduced X-Ray Recaps. This generative AI-powered tool provides concise, spoiler-free summaries of seasons, individual episodes, or even specific sections of episodes. Trained using Amazon SageMaker and leveraging a combination of Amazon Bedrock’s managed foundation models and custom AI models, X-Ray Recaps generate detailed descriptions of key events, locations, timelines, and conversations, ensuring viewers can quickly catch up without missing crucial plot points.

3. Prime Insights for Sports: For sports enthusiasts, Prime Video is bringing fans closer to the action with AI-driven ‘Prime Insights’. Developed by Prime Sports producers, engineers, on-air analysts, and AI/Computer Vision experts in collaboration with an AWS team utilizing Amazon Bedrock, these insights reveal hidden aspects of a game and predict pivotal moments before they occur. A notable example is the ‘Burn Bar’ in Prime’s NASCAR coverage, which analyzes live tracking data and telemetry signals to assess fuel consumption, highlighting team strategies and drivers conserving fuel. Additionally, ‘Rapid Recap’ offers a catch-up feature for those joining a live event late, automatically compiling a summary of highlights into their live feed.

4. Enhanced Accessibility with Dialogue Boost: Addressing a common viewer frustration, Prime Video has implemented ‘Dialogue Boost’. This feature intelligently analyzes the original audio of content to identify instances where dialogue may be obscured by background music or effects. Using an AI-based approach, it isolates speech patterns and enhances the audio specifically for dialogue, making it clearer and more audible. Initially launched in English, this accessibility feature now supports six additional languages: French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi.

5. Improved Video Understanding: Prime Video is also utilizing generative AI to achieve a deeper understanding of its media assets. By employing the Media2Cloud on AWS guidance, the platform conducts comprehensive media analysis at frame, shot, scene, and audio levels. This process enriches asset metadata, enabling teams to more effectively track content rights, verify quality control (QC), analyze performance, and monetize their extensive content library. This also extends to improving the resolution of classic content.
