TLDR: Zoom CEO Eric Yuan predicts that artificial intelligence will usher in a new era where a three or four-day workweek becomes standard, significantly enhancing personal time. While this shift promises increased productivity and a better quality of life, Yuan also warns of inevitable job displacement, particularly in roles involving repetitive tasks, alongside the creation of new opportunities in AI management.
Zoom CEO Eric Yuan has made a significant prediction regarding the future of work, stating that artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to fundamentally transform the traditional five-day workweek into a shorter, more flexible schedule of three or four days. Yuan’s remarks, made in an interview with The New York Times, highlight both the immense potential and the challenging implications of AI’s rapid advancement on the global workforce.
“I feel like if AI can make all of our lives better, why do we need to work for five days a week?” Yuan questioned, signaling a potential paradigm shift in office culture. He further elaborated, “Every company will support three days, four days a week. I think this ultimately frees up everyone’s time.” This optimistic outlook suggests that AI’s ability to automate tasks and boost productivity could lead to a substantial increase in leisure time for employees.
However, Yuan also issued a clear warning about the darker side of this technological revolution: job displacement. He acknowledged that while AI will create new opportunities, it will also inevitably eliminate some existing roles, particularly those centered on repetitive tasks. As an example, Yuan cited entry-level engineers whose coding tasks could be automated by AI. Yet, he emphasized that new responsibilities would emerge, such as managing the code generated by AI and overseeing the growing number of ‘digital agents.’
Yuan’s vision aligns with sentiments expressed by other prominent tech and financial leaders. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has previously speculated about a two or three-day workweek due to AI. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also predicted a four-day workweek, though he cautioned that the shorter schedule might be more intense. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, in 2023, forecasted a 3.5-day workweek, noting that while AI would replace some jobs, it would also improve work-life balance for others.

The discussion around AI’s impact on work is gaining momentum, with some studies already indicating time-saving benefits. A Thomson Reuters survey last year found that professionals and C-level executives expect to save up to 12 hours a week within five years due to AI. Similarly, findings from The Adecco Group revealed that AI is currently helping employees save approximately an hour each day, with some saving up to two hours daily. As businesses adapt to automation and digital transformation, the evolving roles and expectations for workers in an AI-driven economy will be closely watched.
