YouTube Shorts Unveils ‘Extend with AI’ for Advanced Video Creation

TLDR: YouTube Shorts has launched ‘Extend with AI’, a new feature that allows creators to generate additional video segments using AI suggestions, significantly expanding AI-powered music video creation capabilities on the platform.

YouTube Shorts is revolutionizing content creation with the introduction of “Extend with AI,” a groundbreaking feature designed to empower creators with artificial intelligence-generated video segments. Announced on September 26, 2025, this new tool allows users to seamlessly integrate AI-suggested continuations into their existing Shorts, pushing the boundaries of creative expression beyond traditional editing methods.

According to Meaghan from TeamYouTube, “Extend with AI” offers creative prompts that help users add new segments to eligible Shorts, enhancing the platform’s remix capabilities. Creators can select a moment, up to five seconds in length, from an existing Short and then choose from a variety of AI-generated prompts describing potential continuations. Once a prompt is selected, the system generates a new segment, typically lasting eight seconds or less, which can then be incorporated into the creator’s own Short. This remixed creation becomes a new Short, while the original creator’s video remains unchanged.

The feature is largely available to most Shorts that have opted into video remix functionalities. For creators who prefer to keep their content out of AI remixing, an opt-out option is available within YouTube’s creator settings. This new functionality builds upon YouTube’s existing remix tools, such as the “Cut” feature, which already allows creators to add their own endings to Shorts.

“Extend with AI” is the latest stride in YouTube’s broader AI integration strategy. The company has previously rolled out “Dream Track,” which generates instrumental soundtracks for Shorts using AI, and “Dream Screen,” enabling AI-generated video backgrounds from text prompts. These advancements coincide with YouTube’s decision in October 2024 to extend the duration of Shorts from 60 seconds to three minutes, offering creators even more expansive creative possibilities.

Technically, creators can trim the AI-generated segments directly within the Shorts Creation tools to achieve their desired length. During the preview stage, users can also add music from YouTube’s curated audio library or record additional video content. The system’s ability to generate prompts tailored to the specific video content selected for remixing ensures that suggested continuations are contextually relevant and align with the original video’s theme.

Beyond “Extend with AI,” YouTube has been actively developing other AI-powered tools. These include a custom version of Google DeepMind’s Veo 3 video generation model, allowing users to create short, vertical videos with sound from text prompts. Other upcoming features include “Edit with AI,” which transforms raw footage into a first-draft video, and “Speech to Song,” which converts dialogue into musical soundtracks. These tools are designed to streamline the editing process and open new avenues for creative content, particularly beneficial for businesses with limited video production budgets.

The expansion of AI-powered creation tools also aligns with developments in Shorts advertising capabilities. YouTube has integrated Shorts ads into efficient reach line items within Display & Video 360, automatically including Shorts inventory in advertiser campaigns. Recent changes to Shorts view counting methodology, implemented on March 31, 2025, removed minimum watch time requirements, which may influence how AI-enhanced content performs within YouTube’s metrics systems.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan emphasized the company’s philosophy at the “Made on YouTube” event, stating, “Today’s announcements are grounded in our belief that AI should be in service of human creation. We’re developing tools that give creators new ways to tell their stories and viewers ways to discover them.” This statement underscores YouTube’s commitment to leveraging AI to augment human creativity rather than replace it.
