TLDR: Wiley’s zyBooks is rolling out new AI-powered features for its STEM college courseware, including ‘AI Hints’ for coding labs and ‘Generate with AI for zyLabs’ for instructors. These innovations aim to improve student learning outcomes, support instructors in content creation, and bolster academic integrity, all available at no additional cost to users.
Wiley, a global leader in authoritative content and knowledge services, has announced significant AI-driven enhancements to its zyBooks STEM college courseware, set to launch in the upcoming academic year. These new tools are designed to revolutionize instruction, elevate learning outcomes, and reinforce academic integrity for both college students and instructors.
The company’s fastest-growing courseware program, zyBooks, will introduce four new tools, with three being directly AI-driven or AI-related. These include ‘zyLabs AI Hints,’ ‘Generate with AI for zyLabs,’ ‘zyBooks Assessments,’ and ‘Student Behaviour Insights.’ All new features will be available to zyBooks users at no additional cost.
‘zyLabs AI Hints’ acts as an AI-powered tutor, providing targeted feedback to students encountering difficulties in their zyBooks coding labs. Instead of simply providing answers, the tutor offers hints and tips to guide students back on track, fostering a ‘productive struggle’ that enhances problem-solving skills. This feature was successfully piloted in collaboration with the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), with initial results indicating promising potential for student learning and positive reactions from both students and instructors.
For instructors, ‘Generate with AI for zyLabs’ is an AI authoring wizard that simplifies the creation of high-quality, customized zyLab assignments. This addresses a frequent request from Wiley customers, enabling computer science instructors to more easily tailor content to their specific courses and student needs.
Additionally, ‘zyBooks Assessments’ allows instructors to create their own course tests, seamlessly integrating them with reading content, interactive exercises, and homework within the same platform. The ‘Student Behaviour Insights’ tool provides instructors with valuable data to identify students who may be struggling with assignments or potentially misusing AI, enabling timely intervention and support.
