Dehradun, Uttarakhand – September 16, 2025 – Uttarakhand has marked a significant milestone in its technological advancement with the inauguration of its first NVIDIA-powered Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility at Graphic Era University. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, officially opened the state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence, Skill Development, and Innovation in Dehradun on Tuesday.
The expansive facility, spanning 1.5 lakh square feet, is equipped with Uttarakhand’s pioneering NVIDIA AI and HPC hub. At its core lies an NVIDIA DGX B200 system, boasting eight NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs and an impressive 1.74 terabytes (TB) of GPU memory. This advanced technology is capable of delivering 72 petaflops of inference performance, positioning the centre as a leading hub for cutting-edge research. Developed at a cost exceeding ₹10 crore, the centre is poised to revolutionize research and development in critical sectors.
The Centre of Excellence is expected to significantly boost AI research and skill development in diverse fields, including healthcare, agriculture, environment, smart cities, and advanced industries. It is envisioned as a national hub for innovation and skill development, aligning with the government’s ambitious Digital India, Startup India, and Skill India missions. The facility also houses an Apple iOS Development Centre, established through collaborations with Apple and Infosys. Furthermore, Graphic Era University has distinguished itself as India’s first Generative AI-ready campus, powered by AWS.
During the inauguration, Minister Jitendra Singh emphasized the transformative potential of the centre, describing it as a crucial step towards India’s digital transformation. He highlighted the dual nature of AI, stating, “AI can create miracles if used judiciously, but without integrity it can also be misused, as seen in the rise of deepfakes and misinformation. Integrity has no technological substitute.” He further cautioned students and researchers that ethical considerations must guide innovation, adding, “Every tool has a self-limiting utility if integrity is compromised. Only when we combine innovation with honesty can we truly shape India’s digital future.”
Singh also cited examples of AI-enabled telemedicine vans deployed in rural areas, demonstrating how hybrid AI-human models have successfully brought healthcare services to remote villages. Reflecting on India’s rapid technological progress, the minister noted the country’s journey from being a late adopter of television to becoming a leader in space exploration and quantum research, stressing that linking academic research with industry and startups is vital to sustain this momentum.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Uttarakhand’s Minister of Higher Education and Health Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, NITI Aayog Member and Chancellor of Graphic Era University Dr. VK Saraswat, and Chairman of Graphic Era Group of Institutions Dr. Kamal Ghanshala. Graphic Era University, a deemed-to-be university, holds a commendable 48th rank in NIRF 2025 and is accredited with an NAAC A+ grade.
