Uttar Pradesh Inaugurates India’s First Private AI-Augmented University, Aiming to Train 1.5 Lakh Monthly

TLDR: Uttar Pradesh has launched India’s first private Artificial Intelligence-augmented multidisciplinary university in Unnao, established by Chandigarh University. The initiative aims to train 1.5 lakh individuals monthly in AI, data analytics, machine learning, and cybersecurity, as part of a broader state plan to integrate AI across various sectors.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday, July 26, 2025, inaugurated India’s first private Artificial Intelligence-augmented multidisciplinary university in Unnao. This pioneering institution, established by Chandigarh University, is poised to become a futuristic educational hub, blending AI with traditional academic disciplines. The university is situated on the Lucknow–Kanpur highway, strategically positioned to support the development of technical skills within the state.

The launch of this university is a significant step in Uttar Pradesh’s broader strategy to implement Artificial Intelligence across various sectors, including education, security, agriculture, administration, and industry. A key component of this initiative is the “AI Pragya” scheme, under which the state government plans to train a remarkable 10 lakh people in critical technological fields such as AI, data analytics, machine learning, and cybersecurity. This comprehensive training program targets a diverse group, including youth, teachers, village leaders, government workers, and farmers. The ambitious goal is to train 1.5 lakh individuals every month, with partnerships forged with leading technology companies like Microsoft, Intel, Google, and Guvi to facilitate this massive upskilling effort.

Beyond education, Uttar Pradesh is actively expanding the use of AI in public safety through the “Safe City Project.” This project has seen the installation of AI-enabled CCTV cameras, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems, SOS alert systems, and facial recognition technology in 17 city corporations. These advanced systems operate continuously, directly linked to the 112 emergency helpline and police control rooms for real-time monitoring and rapid response.

In the agriculture sector, the state is leveraging AI through the Rs 4,000 crore UP-AGRIS project, backed by the World Bank. This project provides AI-based solutions to 10 lakh farmers, incorporating technologies such as smart irrigation systems, drone-based land mapping, and pest detection tools. The initiative has also connected 10,000 women’s groups and is providing farmer-producer organizations with access to digital markets. Furthermore, the Revenue Department is utilizing satellite imaging and AI for efficient land record management, village-level digital mapping, and improved land distribution. AI is also being integrated into prison and mining operations, demonstrating the state’s commitment to a comprehensive AI adoption strategy across its administrative and economic landscape.
