TLDR: Universal Music Group (UMG) and Stability AI have announced a strategic partnership to develop advanced, AI-powered music creation tools. This collaboration aims to support artists, producers, and songwriters globally by integrating generative AI responsibly, ensuring tools are trained on licensed data, and prioritizing artist feedback to create commercially safe and ethically sound music technology.
Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s largest music company, has entered into a significant strategic alliance with Stability AI, a leader in generative AI, to co-develop professional music creation tools. The partnership, announced on October 30, 2025, aims to leverage generative artificial intelligence to empower artists, producers, and songwriters worldwide, focusing on tools that support the creative process while upholding ethical standards and protecting intellectual property.
Under this alliance, Stability AI’s dedicated research and product teams will work directly with UMG and its diverse roster of artists. The collaboration will involve in-depth research into artist needs, exploration of novel recording and composition concepts, and a comprehensive understanding of how artists interact with and adopt AI technologies. This artist-centric approach is designed to ensure that the developed tools are fully licensed, commercially safe, and foster responsible innovation that benefits both creators and rightsholders, thereby preserving the integrity of the art form.
Michael Nash, Chief Digital Officer and EVP at Universal Music Group, emphasized the company’s foundational commitment to its artists and songwriters. “This agreement is an extension of our fundamental orientation that our artists and songwriters are the cornerstone of our business,” Nash stated. He added, “With AI, as with everything else we do, we start with what best supports our work to help them achieve creative and commercial success and build from that foundation to forge new and better commercial and creative opportunities. And as we’ve made abundantly clear, we will only consider advancing AI tools and products based on models that are trained responsibly.”
Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI, echoed this sentiment, highlighting UMG’s history of innovation. “UMG has long been a leader in technological innovation in music. This partnership marks the next chapter of music creation,” Akkaraju said. He further explained, “At Stability AI, we put the artist at the center and build AI around their unique needs because real transformation has always come from a combination of art and science.”
