UK Water Industry Research Launches AI-Powered Search to Revolutionize Access to Critical Data

TLDR: UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) has unveiled a new AI search tool designed to significantly improve access to its extensive research, directly supporting the UK water sector’s transformation. This initiative, which leverages large language models, provides rapid, cutting-edge information to inform policy and investment decisions, aligning with recommendations from the Independent Water Commission’s final report.

In a pivotal moment for the UK water sector, UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) has announced the launch of an innovative AI search tool, set to transform how stakeholders access its vast repository of critical water research. This advancement directly addresses the recommendations of the recently published Independent Water Commission (IWC) final report, which underscored the vital role of collaborative, evidence-based research in navigating the sector’s profound transformation.

Historically, navigating UKWIR’s extensive online research could be a time-consuming process, particularly when rapid, informed decision-making was required. To streamline this, UKWIR embarked on a project utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) with large language models. The new AI search function allows users to pose specific research questions, generating both contextual results—displayed as a list of relevant reports—and generative results, which provide a valuable written summary of findings.

Mike Rose, UKWIR Chief Executive, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “At this pivotal moment, UKWIR is calling for even greater collaboration across the entire water sector, including its supply chain, and leading academic institutions.” He added, “It is extremely positive that the Independent Water Commission’s report directly identified UKWIR as playing a ‘key role’ in driving collaboration between the industry, research institutions, and academia. This endorsement underscores the vital role we play in supporting innovation and knowledge transfer.”

The IWC report highlights the necessity for a resilient, sustainable, and trusted water future. UKWIR’s new AI search tool is a direct response, empowering organizations and stakeholders with swift access to cutting-edge research to inform crucial policy and investment decisions. As the provider of impartial, science-based data, UKWIR is committed to working closely with regulators, government, private businesses, and all interested parties to ensure decisions are based on the best available evidence.

The project was spearheaded by UKWIR’s office manager Carol Ham and research and communications co-ordinator Freya Caldwell. Beyond the AI search tool, UKWIR also launched a redesigned website in April 2025. Based on extensive user research, the new site features a cleaner, more navigable interface, marking the beginning of a continuous journey to enhance UKWIR’s digital capabilities and support the water sector’s own digital transformation, in line with the ambitious goals set out in the IWC report.

Mr. Rose concluded, “This is a significant first step in UKWIR’s journey towards becoming a digitally agile organisation – one that not just keeps pace with the sector-wide digital transformation, but an organisation that drives first-of-its-kind innovative solutions.” The AI search is currently in a BETA version, allowing users to engage in a conversation for up to 10 questions, with options for generative or report-based responses.
