UK Launches Initiative to Bridge AI Skills Gap in Financial Services

TLDR: The UK government has commissioned the Financial Services Skills Commission (FSSC) to conduct an urgent review into AI and technology skills needs within the financial sector. This initiative, part of the Financial Services Growth and Competitiveness Strategy, aims to ensure the UK workforce is equipped for digitisation and innovation, maintaining the nation’s fintech leadership and unlocking significant economic growth by 2030.

LONDON – The United Kingdom is embarking on a critical mission to fortify its position as a global fintech leader by addressing a burgeoning talent gap in artificial intelligence (AI) and other disruptive technologies within its financial services sector. The government has officially commissioned the Financial Services Skills Commission (FSSC) to undertake a comprehensive review, a move outlined in a letter from the Economic Secretary to the Treasury on November 5, 2025. This strategic initiative is a direct outcome of the Financial Services Growth and Competitiveness Strategy, published in July 2025.

The core objective of this review is to identify the specific AI and technology skills required to ensure a highly skilled financial services workforce across all regions and nations of the UK. The government believes that embedding these crucial skills will drive growth and productivity, enabling the workforce to lead in digitisation, innovation, and the adoption of advanced technologies.

The FSSC will receive support from prominent industry bodies, including the City of London Corporation, TheCityUK, Lloyds Banking Group, and PWC. Their mandate is to meticulously analyse the skills system and provide recommendations on how it can best foster growth and productivity in financial services through the successful adoption and innovation of AI and other potentially disruptive technologies.

Before formulating a detailed plan for enhancing the skills system, the FSSC will conduct an in-depth assessment. This will involve identifying the technologies anticipated to have the most significant impact on the sector’s business practices, workforce, and skills requirements over the next five to ten years. Furthermore, the commission will evaluate the potential impact of these technologies on economic growth and productivity, alongside the specific skills necessary for their effective deployment and integration within the financial services landscape.
