UCLA has taken a significant leap forward in integrating artificial intelligence into its academic and operational framework with the successful conclusion of its AI Innovation Initiative. Launched in Fall 2024, this pioneering pilot project saw a campus-wide call for AI ideas, resulting in nearly 70 innovative projects led by students, faculty, and staff across 27 departments. The initiative’s primary goal was to explore the transformative potential of AI in areas such as automation, educational enhancements, and research, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for a robust, campus-wide AI strategy.
A key component of this initiative was UCLA’s early adoption of ChatGPT Enterprise in Fall 2024, making it the first university in California to incorporate this advanced version of OpenAI’s technology. This integration provided a powerful tool for experimentation, allowing the university community to leverage AI for diverse applications, from streamlining student services and automating workflows to enhancing learning through virtual assistants and personalized support.
Chris Mattmann of UCLA Digital & Technology Solutions emphasized the learning aspect of the pilot, stating, “This pilot taught us a lot about deploying AI at the enterprise level. It’s not just about the tools — it’s about empowering people to use them responsibly and creatively. That’s how we build a future-ready university.” The projects also focused on using AI for real-world challenges in health, safety, and accessibility, and exploring ethical implications to design responsible AI use cases.
The insights gleaned from these grassroots efforts are directly shaping UCLA’s broader AI strategy. This comprehensive strategy includes several key pillars: building a vibrant community of practice, offering expert AI consulting and support services, significantly increasing AI literacy across the campus, piloting new tools, techniques, and technologies, and establishing a robust AI governance framework. To foster AI literacy, the university has already launched the ‘AI Foundations’ module, covering fundamentals, responsible use, productivity, prompt engineering, generative AI, and ethics, with future modules planned for more advanced topics.
Dr. W. Scott Comulada of UCLA Health highlighted the innovative applications emerging from the initiative, noting, “People are increasingly interested in the possibility of creating AI-simulated patients, either as an avatar on a computer screen or a simulated patient you can interact with using virtual reality goggles, and how the technology can be used to drive conversations as a way to practice.”

While the formal AI Innovation Initiative concluded in June 2025, the work is far from over.
