UBS Grades Big Tech’s AI Advancements: Strong Investment, Elusive Monetization

TLDR: UBS has assigned a B+ grade to the ‘Big Four Tech’ companies for their progress in Artificial Intelligence, highlighting robust investment in AI infrastructure but noting that significant monetization of these efforts remains a challenge. The report indicates a substantial increase in AI capital expenditure, with expectations for continued growth, yet calls for improved capital efficiency and broader revenue impact.

In its latest assessment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) progress among the ‘Big Four Tech’ giants, UBS has awarded a B+ grade, acknowledging their strong commitment and encouraging results in the AI domain. However, the report critically points out that the monetization and efficiency of these substantial AI investments are still lagging behind the scale of their ambitions.

The financial institution’s analysis reveals that AI capital expenditure by these leading technology companies is projected to surge by 55% year-on-year in 2025, signifying a robust and ongoing investment cycle. This aggressive spending is anticipated to normalize in 2026, with growth slowing to 22%, as companies adopt more disciplined spending strategies.

Over the past 12 months, the Big Four collectively invested nearly $115 billion in AI-related capital expenditure. This significant outlay translated into an incremental revenue of $170 billion, indicating a capital expenditure intensity of 67%. Looking ahead to the next 12 months, this intensity is expected to slightly improve to 50%. Despite this improvement, it remains considerably higher than the pre-AI norms, which typically ranged between 10-15%.

While recent second-quarter results for 2025 have shown early signs of monetization, particularly through a pick-up in cloud-related growth, UBS maintains that a more substantial and widespread revenue impact is necessary to better align capital expenditure with returns. The report underscores that while these tech leaders are at the forefront of AI development, their journey toward full commercialization and capital efficiency is still unfolding.

UBS analysts recommend a balanced exposure across semiconductors, software, and internet sectors, while also suggesting adding exposure to ‘AI laggards’—companies that may be behind in AI adoption but present potential for growth. This assessment highlights the ongoing challenge for even the most dominant tech players to translate massive AI investments into proportional financial returns.
