U.S. Army Accelerates AI Integration for Enhanced Readiness and Defense

TLDR: The U.S. Army is significantly advancing its adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning to bolster readiness, improve decision-making, and enhance battlefield awareness. Key initiatives include Project Linchpin for integrating AI into sensor and weapon systems, the #DefendAI program to counter adversarial AI threats, and a comprehensive AI Implementation Plan. Top officials, Young Bang and Jennifer Swanson, emphasize the importance of making risk-based decisions and protecting against emerging AI-related security disruptions.

The U.S. Army is making substantial strides in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) across its operations to enhance readiness and gain a competitive edge. According to top tech officials, the Army is broadening its acquisition plans to leverage these cutting-edge technologies for various applications, including improving sensor operations, ground vehicles, aviation, and training capabilities.

Young Bang, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, & Technology (ASA(ALT)), highlighted the urgency of these efforts at the 16th Annual Ground Vehicle Systems Engineering & Technology Symposium (GVSETS) in Novi, Michigan. “We are doing things now so we can accelerate that adoption,” Bang stated, emphasizing the goal to “make risk-based decisions with some controls.”

Beyond offensive applications, the Army is also heavily focused on AI defenses. Jennifer Swanson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Data, Engineering, & Software), underscored the necessity to “protect ourselves from whatever our adversaries will bring to the table.” This defensive posture is central to the Army’s ongoing #DefendAI initiative. Under this program, the service is actively seeking support from companies and academia, having issued a Request for Information (RFI) in July to better understand industry capabilities related to ‘AI and layered defense’ (AI-LDF). The Army is particularly concerned with risks from traditional adversarial methods like data poisoning and model stealing, as well as future security threats. Swanson noted that responses to the RFI were expected by the end of August, and the feedback would inform future competitions and awards, though she admitted, “I don’t know exactly what we’re going to get.”

Another critical initiative is Project Linchpin, announced in 2022 as the Army’s first program of record designed to deliver AI and ML capabilities at scale. This project aims to integrate AI/ML into weapons and sensor modernization programs while safeguarding operational data, thereby enabling faster processing, exploitation, and dissemination of intelligence. In October 2023, contracts for Linchpin were awarded to Booz Allen Hamilton and Red Hat, focusing on Traceability, Observability, Replaceability, and Consumability (TORC) to ensure model and data integrity, data openness, and modular open system architecture (MOSA) design. Swanson anticipates further Linchpin agreements in the coming years, stating, “There is potential for other programs to put out contracts [as well]. We are working through that as part of our 500-day plan.”

The ASA(ALT) also unveiled its AI Implementation Plan in March 2024, structured with 100-day and 500-day execution windows. The 100-day phase, which recently concluded, focused on establishing an AI foundation for future programs. The ongoing 500-day initiative is dedicated to identifying capability gaps across the industry. Swanson acknowledged the significant progress in the commercial sector but stressed that “there are still a lot of things left to be done” in the military context.
