Turnitin Unveils Clarity: An AI-Powered Solution for Academic Integrity and Responsible AI Use in Education

TLDR: Turnitin has announced the general availability of Turnitin Clarity, an AI-powered writing solution designed to enhance academic integrity and guide the responsible use of artificial intelligence in educational settings. This new tool provides a transparent environment for students to develop their writing skills with AI assistance, while offering educators comprehensive insights into the writing process and tools to address potential AI misuse.

OAKLAND, Calif. – July 16, 2025 – Turnitin, a leading provider of technology solutions focused on academic integrity, has officially launched Turnitin Clarity. This purpose-built writing solution is designed to foster academic integrity and promote the responsible integration of artificial intelligence within the classroom. Turnitin Clarity is now generally available as a paid add-on to all Turnitin Feedback Studio customers, building upon a newly rearchitected foundation of the Feedback Studio.

Turnitin Clarity aims to bridge the gap between educators and students by offering a transparent, efficient, and feedback-rich environment for writing assessment in today’s AI-driven learning landscape. The solution provides a dedicated composition space where students can write, revise, and reflect, with the option to utilize an integrated AI assistant for constructive feedback that helps build their skills rather than simply providing answers. This approach empowers students to use AI ethically and confidently, preparing them for future careers where AI proficiency will be essential.

For educators, Turnitin Clarity offers full visibility into the student writing process. This includes insights into draft history through video playback, analysis of pasted text, typing patterns, and construction time. These features enable educators to gain a deeper understanding of how students construct their work, aiding in the assessment of originality and appropriate AI usage. The tool integrates Turnitin’s full suite of integrity solutions, including similarity checks and AI detection, streamlining the review process and allowing educators to deliver prompt, personalized feedback.

Annie Chechitelli, Chief Product Officer at Turnitin, emphasized the company’s vision, stating, “Turnitin Clarity is our response to a defining challenge in education: how to uphold academic integrity and embrace the responsible use of AI. In an AI-powered world, we need more than detection; we need solutions that promote learning, invite dialogue, and equip educators and students to use AI ethically and confidently. That’s why we built Turnitin Clarity.”

James Thorley, Regional Vice President for Asia-Pacific at Turnitin, added, “Turnitin Clarity creates a flexible, transparent, and controlled environment for students to use AI without it detracting from their learning. It also empowers educators to better evaluate integrity and appropriate AI-use, while improving engagement with students.” The goal is to equip both educators and students with the confidence to maintain integrity while cultivating meaningful and practical learning outcomes.

The launch comes at a time when the education sector grapples with the widespread adoption of AI. Recent global research conducted by Turnitin and Vanson Bourne revealed that 78% of surveyed students, educators, and administrators hold positive views on AI’s impact on education. However, a significant 95% expressed concerns about the potential misuse of AI, highlighting the critical need for solutions like Clarity to ensure integrity in an evolving educational landscape. Turnitin Clarity transforms instances of plagiarism or inappropriate AI use into productive learning experiences, helping students develop essential writing, research, and critical thinking skills.
