Tripadvisor’s AI-Driven Evolution: Adapting to the New Search Landscape with Proactive Personalization

TLDR: Tripadvisor is undergoing a significant transformation, leveraging artificial intelligence to pivot from a traditional review site reliant on search referrals to a proactive, personalized travel planning platform. This strategic shift, driven by the rise of AI-first search and declining click-through rates, includes AI-powered push notifications, enhanced app loyalty initiatives, and strategic partnerships, aiming to make Tripadvisor a daily habit for travelers.

Tripadvisor, a long-standing cornerstone for travelers seeking reviews and recommendations, is undergoing a fundamental transformation, strategically leveraging artificial intelligence to adapt to a rapidly evolving digital landscape. This pivot is largely a response to the disruption caused by AI-first search engines, which increasingly provide concise answers directly on search results pages, thereby reducing referral traffic to external platforms like Tripadvisor.

Matthew Dacey, CMO at Tripadvisor, highlighted the urgency of this shift, stating that ‘Google’s AI mode in search is going to eat large chunks of search’ and that ‘It’s going to happen fast as they [Google] push it and more people subsequently adopt it.’ This trend has already impacted Tripadvisor’s traffic, with monthly visits dropping from between 146 million and 169 million in early 2023 to approximately 120 million by February 2025, according to Statista data.

In response, Tripadvisor is reimagining its role, moving beyond being a mid-journey resource to becoming a habitual touchpoint and a primary destination for travel planning. The core of this makeover is an AI-fueled approach to personalization and engagement. The company is harnessing its vast repository of traveler-generated content through AI models that predict and preempt user needs. Instead of waiting for users to search, the Tripadvisor app will proactively deliver context-aware notifications.

These ‘anticipatory nudges’ exemplify a shift from reactive to proactive marketing. Examples include suggestions for a hidden gallery near a user’s hotel as they settle in for the evening, or an itinerary reminder prompting them to explore a landmark before crowds arrive. As Dacey explained, ‘All of our push notifications… can be those questions that travellers might be asking and served to them using AI based on the user-generated content on our site. It’s contextual information for exactly what’s on someone’s mind.’

Beyond AI-driven notifications, Tripadvisor is enhancing its app experience and restructuring its membership program with attractive new perks to encourage habitual usage and drive logged-in behavior. While the platform boasts over 100 million active member accounts, a significant portion are not actively using the app. The goal is to position the app as a daily necessity, akin to weather or news applications, by building trust through transparent sourcing and eliminating friction within the user journey.

Furthermore, Tripadvisor’s transformation extends to strategic collaborations with AI-native search engines, such as Perplexity. By integrating its content into third-party AI overviews, the company positions itself within the emergent ecosystem of generative search, capturing high-intent audiences at the earliest stage of decision-making and turning potential displacement by AI into an opportunity for top-of-funnel visibility.

For marketers and brand executives, Tripadvisor’s pivot offers a valuable blueprint. It underscores the need to diversify acquisition channels beyond traditional search, prioritize transparency, leverage AI for predictive insights, and establish strategic partnerships. In an era where consumer trust dictates loyalty and search traffic is no longer guaranteed, brands must adapt and innovate to thrive, focusing on building loyalty within their owned environments and using AI to push proactive, timely, and useful nudges rather than just reactive responses.
