UBS Predicts Strong ‘U-Shaped Recovery’ for Digital Advertising Market, Driven by AI Innovation

TLDR: UBS Group’s latest research report forecasts a robust ‘U-shaped recovery’ for the global digital advertising market, with AI-driven technological advancements and productivity transformations serving as the core growth drivers for the next 3-5 years. The bank has revised its 2025 digital advertising budget growth forecast upwards to 11.0%, citing a rebound in spending fueled by AI tools, easing macro uncertainties, and resilient consumer demand. Meta Platforms is highlighted as a key beneficiary due to its strong AI ecosystem and extensive user base.

Zurich, Switzerland – A new research report from UBS Group indicates a significant turnaround for the global digital advertising market, projecting a strong ‘U-shaped recovery’ in the near future. The financial giant emphasizes that artificial intelligence (AI) will be the pivotal force behind this resurgence, driving technological restructuring and productivity transformation across digital advertising platforms over the next three to five years.

According to the report, after a period of relative sluggishness in April and May—attributed partly to global tariff disputes—digital advertising budget growth is expected to rebound sharply from June. This renewed momentum is anticipated to propel the industry back to double-digit growth rates for the entire year. UBS has notably revised its forecast for digital advertising budget growth in 2025, increasing it from an initial 9.3% to a more optimistic 11.0%, nearing pre-slump levels.

The accelerated penetration of AI-driven advertising tools is identified as a primary catalyst for this projected growth. These advanced tools are enhancing advertising precision and efficiency, enabling platforms to process vast amounts of data for optimal real-time bidding and audience matching within milliseconds. Furthermore, AI is expected to lower operational thresholds for advertisers, encouraging greater investment in measurable digital channels.

UBS highlights Meta Platforms (META) as a particularly strong contender in this evolving landscape. The report notes that Meta’s exclusive AI ecosystem and its expansive global user base across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp provide a robust foundation for its ‘AI + advertising’ monetization model. A survey conducted by UBS revealed that most advertisers plan to either increase or maintain their spending on Meta’s digital advertising platform, anticipating continued strong performance through the second half of the year and into 2025. UBS maintains a ‘buy’ rating on Meta, with a 12-month target price of $812, noting the company’s ability to achieve profit growth while managing costs.

The broader impact of AI on the market is also underscored, with a recent Bloomberg industry research report cited, projecting the generative AI market’s total revenue to surge from approximately $40 billion in 2022 to an astounding $1.3 trillion by 2032. This massive growth in AI capabilities is expected to underpin the expansion of the digital advertising sector.

Overall, UBS Group anticipates that the improving macro environment, coupled with increasing advertising demand and the transformative power of AI, will lead to a significant release of advertising budgets in the latter half of the year, solidifying the ‘U-shaped recovery’ for the digital advertising market.
