TLDR: Translated, a leader in AI-powered language solutions, has granted €100,000 through its Imminent research center to five pioneering projects. These grants aim to push the boundaries of language technology and services, covering diverse topics from multilingual dictionaries for African languages to localizing multimodal content with generative AI.
Rome, Italy – July 24, 2025 – Translated, a global innovator in AI-powered language solutions, has announced the allocation of €100,000 in research grants to five groundbreaking projects via its dedicated research center, Imminent. These grants, each valued at €20,000, are designed to foster interdisciplinary research globally, propelling advancements in language technology and services.
The Imminent Research Grants program supports projects across five key domains: Language Economics, Language Data, Machine-Learning Algorithms for Translation, Human-Computer Interaction, and Neuroscience of Language. This year’s selected initiatives showcase a broad geographical and thematic scope, spanning three continents.
Among the distinguished recipients are:
Philip Akoda (Nkanda, Nigeria): For the ambitious endeavor of creating the first unified multilingual dictionary specifically for African languages.
Francesca Ferroni and Stefana Garello (University of Parma & Roma Tre, Italy): Their research will delve into the neuroscientific aspects of how metaphorical language is processed when learning a second language.
Mirco Ravanelli (University of Montreal, Canada): Focusing on expanding SpeechBrain into a comprehensive open-source framework for cutting-edge speech models.
Simran Khanuja (Carnegie Mellon University, USA): Working on innovative methods for localizing multimodal content using generative AI.
Barbara Plank (Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Germany): Her project aims to construct the first multilingual, multi-annotator natural language inference benchmark, complete with ecologically valid explanations.
The announcement of these grants coincided with the kickoff event of the DVPS project, a significant European-funded research initiative. Translated coordinates this project, which involves 20 leading research and scientific partners from nine European countries. The DVPS project itself embodies broader, interdisciplinary AI research, particularly in the realm of Physical AI, with the goal of developing new classes of intelligent systems.
Sébastien Bratières, Director of AI at Translated and a member of the grant evaluation committee, emphasized the role of Imminent: “Imminent offers itself as a catalyst to drive innovative solutions in the language space. We look forward to continuing to support groundbreaking projects that have the potential to shape the future of language understanding and communication.”
