TLDR: The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is set to integrate generative artificial intelligence into its operations to bolster anti-stalking measures. The AI system will automate the transcription of consultation audio and generate summaries, allowing police personnel to dedicate more time and resources to direct victim protection.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is taking a significant step towards modernizing its approach to public safety by announcing the integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into its anti-stalking initiatives. This strategic move, slated for implementation, aims to enhance operational efficiency and provide more robust support for victims of stalking and domestic violence.
The core of the new system involves AI automatically transcribing consultation audio and subsequently generating concise summaries. This automation is expected to free up valuable time and personnel, who can then be redeployed to strengthen direct protective measures for individuals suffering from domestic violence and stalking. The MPD’s objective is to swiftly respond to stalking cases, preventing them from escalating into more serious crimes.

In addition to the AI-powered anti-stalking measures, the MPD is also expanding its technological capabilities in other areas. The department plans to deploy autonomous drones to remote Tokyo islands, such as Niijima, to rapidly assess disaster damage, particularly in the event of a Nankai Trough megaquake. Furthermore, four-legged robots will be introduced to handle suspicious objects, a task previously managed by riot police officers in specialized protective gear. These comprehensive technological advancements reflect the MPD’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge solutions for a safer Tokyo.
