Teen Prodigy Kairan Quazi Departs SpaceX for Citadel Securities

TLDR: Kairan Quazi, the 16-year-old who joined SpaceX at 14, is leaving the aerospace company after two years to become a quant developer at Ken Griffin’s Citadel Securities in New York, opting for quantitative finance over offers from leading AI labs and big tech firms.

Kairan Quazi, the remarkable 16-year-old prodigy who made headlines for joining Elon Musk’s SpaceX at the tender age of 14, is embarking on a new chapter in his burgeoning career. After two years contributing to SpaceX’s Starlink division, Quazi is transitioning to a role as a quant developer at Citadel Securities in New York. This move, effective this week, sees him choosing the fast-paced world of quantitative finance over lucrative offers from prominent artificial intelligence research labs and major technology companies.

Quazi, a Bangladeshi-American, has consistently defied traditional academic and career timelines. He skipped from third grade directly to college by age nine and completed an internship at Intel Labs at just ten years old. At 14, he became the youngest graduate of Santa Clara University, earning a degree in computer science and engineering, before joining SpaceX as its youngest employee. At SpaceX, he was instrumental in developing software for production-critical systems, ensuring the precise beam targeting of Starlink satellites to deliver reliable internet services globally.

In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, Quazi articulated his decision, stating, “After two years at SpaceX, I felt ready to take on new challenges and expand my skill set into a different high-performance environment.” He added that Citadel Securities offered “a similarly ambitious culture, but also a completely new domain, which is very exciting for me.”

His choice of Citadel Securities, one of the world’s most influential high-frequency trading firms, underscores a growing trend where the financial sector actively competes with top AI labs and major technology companies for elite engineering talent. Citadel Securities, which handles approximately 35 percent of U.S. retail stock trades and reported nearly $10 billion in revenue in 2024, views Quazi’s recruitment as a significant victory in this talent war.

Quazi elaborated on his preference for quantitative finance, explaining, “Quant finance offers a pretty rare combination: the complexity and intellectual challenge that AI research also provides, but with a much faster pace.” He highlighted the immediate impact visible in his new field: “At Citadel Securities, I’ll be able to see measurable impact in days, not months or years like many research environments.” He further noted, “It’s one of the most prestigious industries you could go into as a computer scientist or mathematician.” In his new role, Quazi will focus on global trading infrastructure, operating at the intersection of engineering and quantitative problem-solving.

Quazi’s background includes a family mix of technical and financial expertise; his mother, Jullia Quazi, is a Wall Street professional, and his father, Mustahid Quazi, is a chemical engineer. This upbringing fostered his early interests in mathematics and computer science. His journey continues to challenge conventional norms, having previously faced “adultism” and even being temporarily locked out of LinkedIn due to age restrictions.
