Taiwan’s Official News Agency Unveils AI Assistant ‘Chih Ming’ to Enhance Journalistic Efficiency

TLDR: Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) has introduced an AI news agent named “Chih Ming” to assist journalists with tasks like fact-checking, typo detection, and content generation. The AI aims to optimize workflows and support in-depth reporting, not replace human journalists.

Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA), the nation’s official news organization, has launched an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) news agent, “Chih Ming,” designed to significantly streamline the work of its journalists. Unveiled by CNA’s Media Lab on Thursday, August 28, 2025, the AI assistant boasts a range of capabilities aimed at enhancing journalistic efficiency and accuracy.

“Chih Ming” is equipped with functions such as fact-checking, typo detection, and caption recommendation. A key feature is its ability to collect data from various reports across multiple languages and generate draft articles in Chinese. Furthermore, it can adapt the angle or structure of a draft based on user requests, offering flexibility in content creation.

The primary objective behind the development of “Chih Ming” is to optimize the working procedures of CNA staff, allowing reporters to dedicate more time to on-site fieldwork and in-depth investigations. “The development of the AI editing assistant is aimed at optimizing our staff’s working procedure rather than to replace them,” stated CNA President Anne Hu Wan-ling. This emphasizes a collaborative approach where AI serves as a powerful tool to augment human capabilities rather than supersede them.

One of its notable features is the “AskCNA” chatbot, integrated into its fact-checking function. This chatbot utilizes a retrieval-augmented generation model, capable of compiling a timeline of events by drawing upon CNA’s extensive archive of reports dating back to 2022. This capability is expected to significantly speed up time-consuming tasks like information gathering and verification.

The creation of “Chih Ming” was a collaborative effort spanning over a year, receiving support from Google’s Taiwan News Digital Co-Prosperity Fund and the nDX Taiwan News Digital Transformation initiative. This initiative underscores a broader trend in the media industry to leverage AI for improved operational efficiency and journalistic output.
