TLDR: WhatsApp has launched a new AI-powered ‘Writing Help’ feature to assist users in drafting, rephrasing, and editing messages with various tones, such as professional, humorous, or encouraging. The tool prioritizes user privacy by utilizing Meta’s Private Processing technology, ensuring messages remain encrypted and are not accessible to WhatsApp or Meta. It is an optional feature, disabled by default, and is currently rolling out in the US and select other countries, with broader availability expected later this year.
WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, has rolled out an innovative AI-powered feature called ‘Writing Help,’ designed to revolutionize how users compose and refine their messages. Announced on August 28, 2025, this new tool aims to provide comprehensive assistance in drafting, rephrasing, and editing texts, allowing for greater flexibility in communication style and tone.
The ‘Writing Help’ feature leverages generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI) to offer suggestions that can adjust grammar, improve phrasing, or reframe a message in various tones, including professional, humorous, or encouraging. This functionality is intended to help users articulate their thoughts more effectively and respond to contacts faster, whether in one-on-one or group chats. For instance, a demonstration showed the AI transforming a direct message like ‘Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa’ into more light-hearted alternatives such as ‘Breaking news: Socks found chilling on the couch’ or ‘Please don’t turn the sofa into a sock graveyard.’
A cornerstone of this new offering is its commitment to user privacy. Meta has built ‘Writing Help’ on its ‘Private Processing’ technology. This ensures that all requests are processed anonymously and messages remain encrypted, meaning neither WhatsApp nor Meta can read the content of the messages or the AI-generated suggestions. The company explicitly states that no information is stored on Meta’s servers once a query has been answered, reinforcing WhatsApp’s brand promise of end-to-end encryption.
To access ‘Writing Help,’ users must first enable the optional feature, as it is disabled by default. Once activated, a small pencil icon will appear in the chat bar when a message is being drafted. Tapping this icon will present various writing options and styles from which users can choose. The feature is currently rolling out in English, starting with users in the United States and several other countries, with plans for expansion to other languages and regions later in the year.

This AI integration is part of a broader trend of incorporating artificial intelligence into everyday applications to enhance user experience. WhatsApp has also introduced other features recently, including scheduled calls and anti-scam security updates, and is reportedly testing a new voicemail feature.
