The xAI Colossus facility, located in Boxtown, a historically Black community in South Memphis founded by formerly enslaved people, has become a focal point of this debate. Reports indicate that the supercomputer, designed to train xAI’s Grok chatbot, consumes an estimated 1.5 million gallons of water daily and uses energy equivalent to that of 100,000 homes. Critics, including the Southern Environmental Law Center, allege that xAI deployed three dozen gas-powered turbines on the 550-acre site without proper environmental review processes or permits. These turbines are accused of emitting toxic nitrogen oxides, exacerbating Memphis’s already poor air quality, which is worse than 86% of major U.S. cities. The neighborhood where Colossus is situated reportedly faces a cancer risk from air pollution four times the national average, and residents have a life expectancy eight years shorter than the U.S. average, with 45% reporting ‘poor or fair’ health.
