In a groundbreaking collaboration, payments giant Stripe and artificial intelligence leader OpenAI have unveiled the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open-source standard poised to redefine the future of online shopping. Announced around late September and early October 2025, this protocol allows AI agents, like those powering ChatGPT, to facilitate and complete transactions directly within chat environments, minimizing friction for consumers and opening new sales channels for merchants.
The essence of agentic commerce lies in empowering AI agents to act on behalf of users, from product discovery to final purchase, all within a single conversational interface. This means a shopper engaging with an AI to explore a product can confirm details and pay without ever navigating to a separate merchant website.
Key functionalities of the ACP include:
Open-Source Standard: The protocol is released under an industry-friendly license (Apache 2.0), encouraging broad adoption and interoperability among AI platforms and merchant systems.
Secure, Tokenized Payments: A core tenet of ACP is security. Payments are tokenized, meaning AI agents do not directly handle sensitive raw card data or payment credentials. Instead, a ‘shared payment token’ is issued, scoped to a specific merchant and cart total, which the agent passes to the merchant via an API to complete the purchase. This ensures that established payment rails are utilized, safeguarding user financial information.
Merchant Control: Merchants remain the ‘merchant of record,’ retaining full ownership of fulfillment, returns, and customer service. The AI agent merely initiates a checkout session that the merchant validates and completes through their existing systems.
Broad Payment Method Support: While initial rollouts support Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, and credit cards, the protocol is designed to accommodate a wide array of payment types, including stablecoin transfers and real-time payments, reflecting a forward-looking approach to digital transactions.
Instant Checkout: The protocol enables an ‘Instant Checkout’ experience directly within ChatGPT, initially for U.S. Etsy sellers and with a planned expansion to over 1 million Shopify merchants.
Stripe CEO Patrick Collison remarked on the evolving landscape, stating, “It’s clear that internet purchasing modalities are going to change a lot, and we’re excited to start to lay some of the foundations.” OpenAI emphasized that product search results within ChatGPT will remain ‘organic and unsponsored,’ ranked purely on user relevance, ensuring that items purchasable via ACP are not preferentially displayed.
For businesses, agentic commerce presents a revolutionary shift, offering a new, high-conversion sales channel without requiring extensive changes to their existing tech stacks. Consulting firm Edgar Dunn & Co. projects that the value of AI-driven commerce could surge to $1.7 trillion by 2030, a significant jump from $136 billion this year. Google recently introduced its own Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open-source framework designed to support agentic AI, which employs ‘mandates’—digital contracts—to verify AI agent directives and protect payment data. As agentic commerce platforms continue to develop, safeguarding against errors and fraud remains a critical concern, with both ACP and AP2 implementing mechanisms to address these challenges.
