TLDR: Standard Chartered is strategically positioning itself as Asia’s ‘financial super-connector,’ with Singapore serving as the central hub for its operations. The bank is adapting to shifting global trade routes and geopolitical dynamics by leveraging its extensive network across 53 markets, including all 10 ASEAN nations. Key initiatives include significant growth in sustainable finance, the integration of advanced AI tools like SC GPT to enhance productivity and client engagement, and the introduction of new services such as scam insurance and alternative investment funds.
Standard Chartered is strategically reinforcing its position as Asia’s ‘financial super-connector,’ with Singapore at the core of this ambitious strategy. Amid a global landscape characterized by evolving trade routes and geopolitical shifts, the bank is leveraging its extensive global presence, spanning 53 markets worldwide and all 10 ASEAN nations, to facilitate cross-border growth and diversification.
Patrick Lee, Standard Chartered’s CEO for Singapore and ASEAN, highlighted the dynamic nature of current global trade. ‘We are seeing a redefinition of the corridors of globalisation. Trade corridors are evolving rapidly and are likely to be more dynamic,’ Lee stated. This environment, he noted, plays directly into the bank’s strengths, given its deep-rooted presence in key growth regions. Singapore, where Standard Chartered established its first branch 166 years ago, now serves as the bank’s ASEAN hub and is the second-largest contributor to its group income globally.
The bank’s cross-border strategy emphasizes diversification in an increasingly complex and fragmented world. Its strong presence across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East positions it uniquely to serve as ‘the Asia super-connector.’ Lee further elaborated on this, stating, ‘We lie strategically in the epicentre of growth and are a key player in the China Plus One strategy.’
Beyond traditional banking, Standard Chartered is making significant strides in sustainable finance, reporting a 32 percent year-on-year growth in its sustainable finance assets portfolio, reaching US$23.3 billion in 2024. This generated US$982 million in sustainable finance income, nearing its 2025 target of US$1 billion.

Technological integration is a cornerstone of the bank’s strategy. In March 2025, Standard Chartered launched SC GPT, its proprietary Generative AI tool, across 41 markets, including Singapore. This tool is designed to enhance operational efficiency, boost productivity, and refine sales and marketing efforts to drive revenue growth. Furthermore, AI is actively supporting relationship managers in client engagement, enabling more personalized advice, while Adobe Firefly has been integrated into campaign management processes. The bank is also addressing growing digital security concerns, becoming the first Singapore bank in March 2025 to offer complimentary scam insurance coverage for unauthorized electronic transfers due to phishing and malware scams, particularly for older customers. Additionally, in April 2025, the bank rolled out an alternative investment fund focused on sports, media, and entertainment, catering to the increasing demand for diversification and alternative asset classes among sophisticated wealth clients.
