Santander Accelerates Digital Transformation with Major AI Integration, Targeting ‘AI-Native’ Status

TLDR: Banco Santander is making significant strides in its digital transformation, aiming to become an ‘AI-native’ bank by deeply integrating artificial intelligence into its core operations. The bank has rolled out OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise to 15,000 employees, with plans to double that number by year-end, anticipating substantial operational efficiencies and cost savings.

Banco Santander is embarking on an ambitious journey to redefine its operational framework, with a strategic focus on becoming an ‘AI-native’ bank. This transformation involves embedding artificial intelligence deeply across its various functions, from customer interactions to back-office processes. A cornerstone of this initiative is the bank’s significant investment in OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise, a tool now being deployed across its global workforce.

In a rapid rollout, Santander has already introduced ChatGPT Enterprise to nearly 15,000 employees across Europe and the Americas within just two months. The bank aims to expand this deployment to 30,000 staff members by the end of the year, encompassing approximately 15% of its total workforce. This move is designed to automate customer interactions, infuse workflows with advanced intelligence, and drive substantial operational efficiencies.

The early results of Santander’s AI initiatives are promising. The bank reported over €200 million in savings generated by AI efforts in 2024 alone. Furthermore, AI-powered copilots are now assisting in more than 40% of contact-center interactions, significantly enhancing customer service. In Spain, speech analytics technology processes 10 million voice calls annually, automatically updating CRM systems and freeing up over 100,000 hours for employees to focus on higher-value tasks.

Ricardo Martín Manjón, Santander’s chief data and AI officer, articulated the vision behind this transformation, stating, ‘We’re reimagining Santander’s operations, grounding every decision in clean, trusted data, automating customer interactions and infusing every workflow with intelligence.’ He emphasized that this strategic shift is ‘less about gadgetry and more about changing culture, productivity and experience,’ highlighting a commitment to ‘real impact, operational rigour, and human empowerment, with the trust, scale, and humanity that banking demands.’

Santander’s AI strategy is part of a broader ‘data and AI-first’ overhaul, ensuring that AI is integrated into core banking functions such as product management, credit, marketing, service, and operations. The bank is adopting a modular technology stack, allowing it to collaborate with various AI vendors, including Microsoft and Amazon, alongside OpenAI, to build a robust and flexible AI ecosystem.

Governance remains a critical aspect of Santander’s AI implementation. The bank has explicitly stated that customer data will not be used to train external AI models, underscoring its commitment to data privacy and security. Additionally, a mandatory AI training program for all staff is slated to commence in 2026, ensuring that the workforce is equipped to leverage these new technologies effectively.

This proactive embrace of AI positions Santander at the forefront of digital innovation in the banking sector, mirroring similar moves by rivals like BBVA, which has also expanded its ChatGPT Enterprise licenses.
