TLDR: Sri Lanka’s leading internet engineers, academics, and industry leaders convened at the ninth annual Lanka Network Operators Group (LKNOG) conference in Colombo to strategize the nation’s digital infrastructure amidst the rise of artificial intelligence and increasing cyber threats. The event highlighted practical AI applications in network engineering, discussed 5G deployment, emphasized the importance of local internet exchange COLOCIX, and explored AI-driven cybersecurity strategies to protect data centers and cloud environments.
Colombo, Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka’s top internet engineers, academics, and industry leaders gathered in Colombo last month for the ninth annual Lanka Network Operators Group (LKNOG) conference, a pivotal event aimed at shaping the nation’s digital infrastructure for an era defined by artificial intelligence and evolving cyber threats. Held on July 21 at the Galle Face Hotel, the conference served as a crucial forum for collaborative efforts to enhance the speed, security, and resilience of the internet for all Sri Lankans.
The discussions moved beyond technical jargon, focusing on tangible solutions. A key highlight was the immediate demonstration of AI’s practical applications by Prof. Roshan Ragel from LEARN, who showcased how generative AI could revolutionize traditional network engineering tasks such as planning and troubleshooting. This underscored the transformative potential of AI in optimizing digital operations.
In a global context, Lia Hestina of the RIPE NCC presented a compelling case study on how the internet adapted following significant cable damage in the Baltic Sea. This provided valuable lessons in network resilience, particularly relevant for an island nation like Sri Lanka, which faces unique geographical challenges.
The conference also delved into specific aspects of Sri Lanka’s digital evolution:
5G Deployment: Shalika Halpandeniya of Dialog explored the transformative potential of 5G networks, emphasizing their role in advancing digital connectivity across the country.
Internet Infrastructure: R.P.D.C. Kaushalya from SLT-Mobitel highlighted the strategic importance of COLOCIX, Sri Lanka’s leading Internet Exchange, as a vital hub for managing local data traffic and ensuring efficient connectivity.
Cybersecurity: With cyber threats on the rise, experts from SLT and OREL IT presented advanced, AI-driven strategies designed to safeguard modern data centers and protect cloud-based environments from disruptive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. This focus on AI in cybersecurity reflects a proactive approach to national digital security.
