A new startup, Sphinx, is making waves in the artificial intelligence landscape, having recently secured a $9.5 million seed funding round to address a significant challenge facing current AI models: their reliability when dealing with real-world business data.
Co-founded by former Citadel data scientist Rohan Kodialam and engineer Jamie Bloxham, Sphinx is building an AI solution specifically engineered to work dependably with complex datasets, moving beyond the language-centric capabilities of many existing generative AI tools.
Generative AI, including popular chatbots and AI copilots, excels at language tasks by predicting the next token in a sequence based on statistical probabilities. However, as Rohan Kodialam, Sphinx’s CEO, points out, “the moment you try to breach that boundary of language, you start to run into problems, and that’s what people are running into now.” He further elaborates, “If you try to use [generative AI] on a real business application where it’s not just about saying stuff but about doing stuff, all of a sudden you are now in a much more difficult spot.” This limitation has contributed to growing skepticism within the global AI boom.
Recent reports underscore this skepticism. An MIT project on ‘the agentic web’ indicated that despite up to $40 billion in enterprise investment, a staggering 95% of organizations are seeing no return. While the study’s evidence was noted as thin, U.S. Census Bureau data corroborates a trend: fewer large companies are adopting AI in their operations, marking the first sustained decline since ChatGPT’s debut in 2022.
To counter this trend and fill the existing void, Kodialam and Bloxham, who serves as CTO, established Sphinx. The seven-person firm, based in Queens, New York, successfully closed its $9.5 million seed round last week. The funding was led by Lightspeed, with additional backing from prominent investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, BoxGroup, K5, Impatient Ventures, Steve Cohen, and Naveen Rao.
