Chennai, India – Speciale Invest, a prominent venture capital firm headquartered in Chennai, has announced the successful closure of its third investment fund, Fund III, securing ₹600 crore (approximately $72 million USD). This achievement surpasses the firm’s initial target of ₹500 crore ($60 million USD), underscoring growing investor confidence in India’s burgeoning deep-tech ecosystem.
The newly raised capital is earmarked for strategic investments in 18 to 20 early-stage deep-tech startups over the next four years, spanning from 2025 to 2029. The fund’s focus areas are diverse and critical, encompassing artificial intelligence (AI), space technology, advanced manufacturing, energy, health, quantum technologies, secure communications, climatetech, and dual-use defence innovation. These sectors are deemed crucial for India’s economic stability and national security, aligning with the nation’s push for ‘sovereign tech’ capabilities.
Vishesh Rajaram, Managing Partner at Speciale Invest, emphasized the strategic importance of these investments, stating, “We believe the next generation of global champions will emerge from India’s labs, R&D centres, and workshops.” He further added, “In a geopolitically complex and technologically interdependent world, building for India’s resilience and sovereign capabilities is not just a national imperative—it is also a generational venture opportunity.”
Speciale Invest, founded in 2017, primarily invests at the pre-seed and seed stages. The initial ticket sizes for investments from Fund III will range between ₹7 crore and ₹10 crore. A substantial portion of the fund, ₹300 crore (50%), has been reserved for follow-on investments, reflecting the firm’s commitment to supporting its portfolio companies through their often-long development cycles. Rajaram noted, “We’ve realised that some of these companies have a long journey and will need capital over subsequent rounds. Therefore, having a larger fund allows us to sort of put capital to work in subsequent rounds over a period of time. That enables us to support the companies that are probable to be successful over a longer period of time.”
