Last year alone, India successfully attracted over $1.5 billion in AI investments, signaling a strong global confidence in its burgeoning AI sector. However, the country’s ambitions extend beyond merely attracting foreign capital or exporting skilled professionals. India is now resolutely focused on cultivating and deploying its own AI innovations, aiming to solve domestic challenges while also contributing to global technological advancements.
A cornerstone of India’s AI strategy is a steadfast commitment to responsible development. As the nation’s AI ambitions soar, so too must its dedication to accountability, with security, ethics, and inclusion forming the bedrock of its AI initiatives. This holistic approach ensures that AI development is not only technologically advanced but also socially responsible and equitable.
Ganesh Gopalan, CEO and co-founder of Gnani.AI, a conversational AI platform and a key participant in the IndiaAI Mission, emphasized India’s inherent strengths. “India has always been well placed in the software world, and AI will be no different,” Gopalan stated. He further elaborated that the true opportunity for India in AI lies beyond large language models (LLMs), focusing instead on “solving real-world problems across industries and governance — for India and for the world.” This highlights a pragmatic approach to AI, prioritizing tangible impact over theoretical advancements.
The shift from IT services to comprehensive AI solutions is already well underway. India is not content with simply being a talent exporter; it aspires to be a creator and consumer of its own AI innovations. Experts are advocating for the emergence of “lighthouse” AI companies—homegrown Indian enterprises poised to lead on the global stage.
AI is already demonstrating transformative applications across various sectors in India. In healthcare, it is being utilized for diagnosing tuberculosis via x-ray scans, detecting breast cancer, and forecasting extreme weather events, often outperforming human specialists. In the education sector, AI-powered adaptive tools are providing personalized learning experiences, offering crucial support to struggling students and children with learning disabilities. Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at MeitY and CEO of IndiaAI Mission, provided a compelling use case: “A woman in a remote tribal village can call a toll-free number, speak in her native language, describe her health symptoms, and receive reliable medical advice instantly.” This illustrates the potential for AI to bridge accessibility gaps and deliver essential services to underserved populations.
However, this rapid advancement is accompanied by a recognition of emerging threats, such as deepfakes and AI-led cybercrimes. Consequently, ethical AI governance has become paramount. Saurabh Sahu, MD & Lead – India Business, Accenture India, cautioned that “Ambition must be tempered with responsibility.” He stressed the imperative to “ensure AI is governed well, embedded into education, and used inclusively.”
