Generative AI Propels India’s Next Wave of Application Modernization and Digital Transformation

At the core of this transformation is the imperative for an ‘AI-ready’ infrastructure. Data centers in India are undergoing significant upgrades to support the power-intensive demands of AI workloads, particularly those involving large language models and generative AI. Projections indicate a substantial growth in India’s data center capacity, from 960 MW to an estimated 7.5–9 GW by FY30, with these facilities expected to consume 6% of India’s total electricity by 2030. This expansion necessitates advanced cooling solutions and a synchronized scaling of memory, storage, and networking to ensure efficient performance for AI applications.

The ‘IndiaAI Mission’ is playing a crucial role in accelerating this journey, focusing on enhancing computing power, improving data quality, nurturing homegrown innovation, and attracting top talent. The mission emphasizes the development of ethical and impactful AI solutions, fostering startups and industry collaborations to build a future where AI benefits all citizens.

Industry leaders highlight India’s unique potential to lead the global Generative AI movement, drawing parallels to the nation’s success in digital payments with UPI. Despite a late start, India became a global leader in UPI transactions, processing over 172 billion transactions in 2024, accounting for 25% of the world’s total digital transactions. Experts believe a similar trajectory is possible for GenAI if the nation unites to build its next-generation foundational models.

Enterprises in India are increasingly moving beyond mere cost optimization to harness AI’s transformative potential for revenue generation, process efficiency, enhanced customer experience, and the creation of new business models. While many organizations initially focused on automating existing processes, the true value of AI lies in its ability to reorient processes entirely, enabling tasks that once required multiple steps to be completed in one.

The Indian government is actively embracing GenAI, catalyzing the AI ecosystem and implementing AI solutions across all levels—central, ministries, authorities, and state governments. This adoption aims to augment government capabilities, deliver better services to citizens, and improve internal efficiencies. Initiatives include developing common AI models for horizontal use cases like taxation and civil aviation, as well as sectoral applications in healthcare, agriculture, and education.

Challenges remain in the widespread implementation of AI, including the need for enterprises and government bodies to adapt workflows and habits. Data sharing, particularly within the public sector, presents a significant hurdle, as data is the ‘lifeblood of AI.’ However, India’s inherent technological sophistication, developed over the past 15 years, suggests that AI adoption in the country could happen much faster than global trends.

Furthermore, India’s multi-lingual and multi-cultural diversity provides a fertile ground for localized AI development, including regional language models and vernacular chatbots, ensuring that AI benefits are inclusive and accessible to all segments of the population.
