India’s IT Sector Undergoing Transformation: Global Capability Centers Surge Amidst AI-Driven Workforce Shifts

TLDR: India’s IT landscape is experiencing a significant overhaul driven by the rapid expansion of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and the increasing adoption of AI-driven automation. This shift is challenging traditional IT outsourcing firms, leading to workforce adjustments and layoffs, while GCCs are emerging as key innovation hubs, attracting talent and contributing substantially to India’s tech exports.

The Indian IT industry is currently undergoing a profound transformation, marked by the ascendance of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and the pervasive influence of artificial intelligence. This dual force is redefining employment patterns and business models, posing significant challenges to established IT outsourcing giants like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro.

GCCs, essentially in-house operational units established by multinational corporations within India, are rapidly expanding. These centers allow parent companies direct control over technology processes that were previously outsourced, driven by a strategic desire for enhanced control, greater cost efficiency, and closer alignment with core business objectives. Recent data indicates a remarkable surge in their presence, with approximately 1,700 GCCs now operating in India, collectively employing nearly two million professionals. This number is projected to grow further, with estimates suggesting 2,100–2,200 centers and 2.5–2.8 million jobs by 2030, potentially generating a market value of $99–105 billion.

The financial performance of GCCs underscores their growing dominance. In FY24, GCC revenues grew at an impressive 40%, significantly outpacing the negative to sub-5% growth rates reported by the top five Indian IT companies for the same period and FY25. This growth is fueled by their increasing contribution to India’s IT exports, with export revenue leaping 40% year-over-year to $64.6 billion in FY 2024 alone. Projections for FY25 indicate a 14% growth rate for GCCs, contributing 4.5% to India’s GDP and generating over $150 billion in IT and IT exports.

A critical aspect of this transformation is the role of artificial intelligence. AI-driven automation is not only enhancing efficiency within GCCs but also contributing to workforce restructuring across the broader IT sector. While AI enables higher output with the same number of people, it has also been cited as a factor in layoffs at major firms, such as the reported 12,000 layoffs at TCS. Conversely, GCCs are actively leveraging India’s deep STEM talent pool for high-value work, including AI model training, AI-first product development, and global cloud-platform engineering. Over 70% of Indian GCCs are now driving core digital transformation roadmaps, moving beyond traditional back-office functions to become strategic innovation hubs.

The shift is also evident in talent acquisition. In 2024, GCCs hired 110,000 professionals, an 83% increase over 2023, with a significant 53% of this intake directly siphoned from rival IT services firms. This has led to a spike in attrition rates at legacy services firms, reaching 16%, as experienced professionals seek faster career progression and product-ownership roles within GCCs. India’s appeal as a global hub for cutting-edge digital operations is rooted in its abundant tech talent, cost advantages, and a conducive environment for innovation.

The future of India’s IT landscape necessitates strategic adaptations from traditional IT companies. As GCCs continue to redefine the outsourcing model by insourcing core tech tasks and high-value work, Indian IT firms are compelled to innovate and develop new business models to remain competitive in this evolving ecosystem.
