SoftBank Group and OpenAI Forge Joint Venture to Revolutionize Japanese Enterprise with AI

TLDR: SoftBank Group and OpenAI have officially launched SB OAI Japan G.K., a 50-50 joint venture aimed at developing and marketing advanced agent-type AI technology, dubbed ‘Crystal intelligence,’ exclusively for the Japanese enterprise market. This initiative, backed by SoftBank’s prior $30 billion investment in OpenAI, seeks to transform corporate management and operational practices, with services expected to roll out from 2026 after initial internal deployment within SoftBank Corp.

Tokyo, Japan – In a significant move set to reshape Japan’s corporate landscape, SoftBank Group and leading artificial intelligence research company OpenAI have announced the establishment of a new joint venture, SB OAI Japan G.K. This strategic partnership, formalized on November 6, 2025, will focus on developing and localizing advanced agent-type AI technology specifically designed to enhance corporate management and operational practices across Japanese enterprises.

The newly formed entity, SB OAI Japan, is equally owned by SoftBank and OpenAI. Its primary offering will be an innovative AI technology named ‘Crystal intelligence,’ described as a packaged enterprise AI solution. This platform is engineered to improve productivity and management efficiency by handling various operations, including information collection and document preparation.

Masayoshi Son, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group, emphasized the transformative potential of this collaboration. ‘Together with OpenAI, we’re driving the AI revolution to the next stage,’ Son stated, highlighting that AI agents will be capable of ‘understanding our goals and collaborating with each other to autonomously carry out tasks.’ He believes this tie-up marks the beginning of a new era of innovation that will fundamentally alter how people work and businesses are managed.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed this sentiment, noting that the joint venture ‘will accelerate our vision for bringing advanced AI’ to some of the world’s most influential companies, with Japan as the initial focus.

SoftBank Group’s commitment to this venture is substantial, following a $30 billion investment in a for-profit OpenAI unit made in April. The conglomerate plans to leverage its extensive network within corporate Japan to commercialize these AI solutions.

Before ‘Crystal intelligence’ is rolled out to domestic clients, SoftBank Corp, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, will internally adopt the technology. This internal deployment is crucial for validating its effectiveness in product development and business transformation, accumulating valuable know-how and insights that will then be passed on to other companies through SB OAI Japan. SoftBank President Junichi Miyakawa commented on the internal adoption, stating, ‘The introduction of the technology will drastically change the way we work and the speed. We are preparing with high hopes.’

The joint venture anticipates marketing ‘Crystal intelligence’ exclusively in Japan starting in 2026. This move aligns with SoftBank’s broader strategic shift towards actively generating revenue from its technology investments, moving beyond traditional equity holdings to emphasize measurable business outcomes.
