Smartphone Industry Embraces Generative AI: A New Era of Intelligent Mobile Devices Dawns

TLDR: Major smartphone manufacturers like iQOO, along with chip giants Qualcomm and MediaTek, are spearheading a revolution in mobile technology by integrating advanced AI, particularly generative AI, directly into devices. This shift is poised to dramatically increase shipments of AI-enabled smartphones, with projections indicating a 364% surge in the next two years, reaching 234.2 million units in 2024. The focus is on delivering personalized, intuitively responsive, and highly efficient user experiences through on-device AI processing.

The global smartphone industry is undergoing a profound transformation as leading companies, including iQOO, Qualcomm, and MediaTek, are making Artificial Intelligence, especially generative AI, the cornerstone of their next wave of innovation. This strategic pivot is set to redefine mobile technology, moving beyond traditional benchmarks to prioritize intelligent, adaptive, and highly personalized user experiences.

Market analysts are forecasting explosive growth in the AI smartphone segment. According to IDC, shipments of generative AI-enabled smartphones are projected to skyrocket by a remarkable 364% within the next two years, reaching an estimated 234.2 million units in 2024. Further underscoring this trend, Canalys predicts that by 2025, nearly 28% of all new smartphones introduced to the market will be equipped with generative AI capabilities, highlighting the industry’s robust commitment to delivering smarter mobile experiences.

This revolution is not solely driven by smartphone brands but is deeply rooted in the advancements made by chip manufacturers. Companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek are investing heavily in developing sophisticated chipsets with dedicated AI engines. These powerful processors enable complex AI tasks to be performed directly on the device, reducing reliance on cloud connectivity and enhancing speed, privacy, and security.

Anku Jain, Managing Director, MediaTek India, emphasized this commitment, stating, ‘At MediaTek, we are embedding powerful AI capabilities directly into our chipsets, from advanced on-device language processing to real-time image enhancement and intelligent power management.’ This integration allows for features such as real-time image processing, intuitive voice command understanding, predictive user actions, and enhanced security, all executed with lightning speed.

Qualcomm also highlights AI’s transformative impact, noting that it is ‘reshaping the very definition of a smartphone for Indian consumers.’ The company points to a future where devices offer ‘personalized user experiences and smarter cameras to advanced voice assistants and predictive performance optimization.’ A representative from Qualcomm India’s Mobile, Computing, and XR business further elaborated on the evolving consumer priorities, stating, ‘AI is no longer a supporting feature; it is rapidly becoming the mainstream core of smartphone purchasing decisions. Beyond traditional benchmarks like battery life, camera quality, and display, our consumer insights show a clear shift: users now prioritize devices that can understand, adapt, and respond to their needs.’
