TLDR: Sentient, an AI firm, has unveiled ‘The GRID,’ an open-source Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) network designed to offer a decentralized alternative to proprietary AI marketplaces. The platform enables developers to build, monetize, and collaborate on AI agents and models, fostering a community-driven AGI economy.
New York-based artificial intelligence company, Sentient, a notable competitor to OpenAI, announced today the launch of ‘The GRID,’ an innovative open-source network aimed at democratizing the development and monetization of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) systems. This initiative positions The GRID as a decentralized alternative to the more closed AI marketplaces currently dominated by entities like OpenAI.
The GRID is designed to empower developers by allowing them to integrate their AI agents, models, and tools into the network. A key feature of the platform is its monetization framework, which enables developers to earn token-based rewards, with additional options for usage fees and subscriptions. This structure is intended to foster a vibrant, community-driven ecosystem for AI innovation.
Upon its debut, The GRID already boasts a substantial foundation, hosting over 40 distinct AI agents, integrating with 50 diverse data sources, and supporting more than 10 core models. This comprehensive suite spans both traditional Web2 and emerging Web3 technologies. Among the notable tools available are ‘Napkin,’ a generative graphics engine, and ‘Exa,’ a search startup. The network also supports blockchain-connected agents deployed across various platforms, including Base, Polygon, and Arbitrum.

Users can interact with and leverage these diverse AI capabilities through ‘Sentient Chat,’ an intuitive interface that facilitates the discovery and combination of agents into complex workflows. These workflows are capable of handling a wide array of tasks, from routine calendar coordination to advanced code generation and sophisticated data visualization. Sentient’s broader vision, as articulated in earlier communications, is to cultivate an ‘Open AGI Economy’ where ownership rights are brought to open AI development. The company aims to invent science and technology that allows anyone to build, collaborate on, own, and monetize AI products, thereby ushering in an era of AI entrepreneurship. This includes pioneering ‘Open, Monetizable and Loyal (OML)’ models, which are designed to remain aligned with the community that builds them, enforced by an underlying blockchain protocol, ensuring a shared and equitable AGI economy.
