This rapid ascent is a direct reflection of visionary leadership, strategic foresight, and an unwavering national commitment to technological sovereignty, as highlighted by Muhammad Khurram Khan, a professor of cybersecurity at King Saud University.
The Kingdom’s ambitious journey is deeply aligned with its Vision 2030, positioning AI as a national priority at the heart of its economic transformation and modernization agenda. This top-level commitment, supported by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has enabled Saudi Arabia to build world-class digital infrastructure, advance AI research and innovation, and lay the foundation for long-term self-reliance in advanced and disruptive technologies.
SDAIA has developed a comprehensive strategic roadmap aimed at enhancing Saudi Arabia’s global competitiveness by leveraging data and AI to drive economic growth and develop human capabilities. Global Rankings: Saudi Arabia advanced 28 places to rank 41st globally in the 2024 Open Data Inventory (ODIN) by Open Data Watch, and climbed to 9th among G20 nations.
“Super Apps”: Platforms like Tawakkalna now serve over 34 million users with more than 1,000 services from 140+ providers. The Absher platform significantly reduced government office congestion, saving approximately 560 million sheets of paper and reducing 500 million kilograms of carbon emissions between 2018 and 2020, generating annual savings exceeding SAR17 billion.
International Cooperation: Saudi Arabia has taken a leadership role by establishing the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) in Riyadh under UNESCO’s auspices as a Category 2 Center.
