TLDR: Samsung has launched its latest foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event. These new models are significantly slimmer and lighter, addressing previous consumer feedback on bulkiness. They come equipped with enhanced AI features, improved durability, and more powerful processors, aiming to solidify Samsung’s leadership in the foldable market and integrate AI deeply into the user experience.
NEW YORK – Samsung Electronics Co. has officially unveiled its seventh generation of foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7, at the highly anticipated Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event held in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The new devices are touted as Samsung’s slimmest and most powerful foldables to date, packed with advanced artificial intelligence tools and larger displays, signaling a strategic move to reinforce its dominance in the burgeoning foldable market and boost mobile revenue.
Revolutionary Design and Enhanced Portability
A key focus for the new Galaxy Z series is a dramatic reduction in thickness and weight, directly addressing consumer feedback regarding the bulkiness of previous models. The Galaxy Z Fold7 is remarkably 25% thinner and 10% lighter than its predecessor, boasting a folded thickness of just 8.9 millimeters and a weight of 215 grams. Its main display has expanded by 11%, now spanning 203.1 mm diagonally when unfolded, while the cover display measures 6.5 inches with a new 21:9 aspect ratio. The Galaxy Z Flip7 also sees a slimmer build, measuring 13.7 mm when folded (down from 14.9 mm), and features a larger 174.1 mm main screen. These advancements are the culmination of Samsung’s dedicated ‘ultra-thin foldable’ development initiative launched last year.
Cutting-Edge AI and Performance
Both the Fold7 and Flip7 are engineered with enhanced AI capabilities. The Fold7 introduces a 200-megapixel wide camera and a new generative AI-based ‘ProVisual Engine,’ designed to automatically enhance image and video quality, even in challenging low-light conditions. Powering the Galaxy Z Fold7 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor, delivering a significant 41% boost in neural processing unit (NPU) efficiency, a 38% improvement in CPU performance, and a 26% increase in GPU power compared to the previous generation. This robust performance enables on-device AI features to run seamlessly without relying on cloud servers. The Flip7 is powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos chips. New Galaxy Z Fold7 owners will also receive expanded access to Google AI Pro and 2TB of cloud storage for six months at no additional cost. Furthermore, Samsung also debuted its latest smartwatch, the Watch8, equipped with Google’s AI voice assistant, Gemini, capable of providing personalized recommendations.
Unprecedented Durability
Durability, a long-standing concern for foldable devices, has seen substantial improvements in the new lineup. The Galaxy Z Fold7 features a reengineered ‘Armor Flex Hinge’ with an enhanced water droplet design and a new multi-rail structure. This innovation not only reduces visible creasing but also significantly increases durability by dispersing impact more evenly when folding. The outer shell is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, while the internal screen is reinforced with a titanium plate layer and 50% thicker Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG). The frame and hinge housing are constructed from Advanced Armor Aluminum, increasing strength and hardness by 10%.
Strategic Vision and Market Outlook
TM Roh, head of Samsung’s Mobile Experience Business Division, stated, “With groundbreaking design and powerful AI, the Z Fold series will deliver an evolved foldable experience for users.” Fadi Abu Shamat, Head of Mobile Division at Samsung Gulf Electronics, emphasized that the Fold7 represents a major leap forward, noting that “completely redesigning the device while integrating high-performance capabilities and slimming it down was a significant engineering feat.” Samsung aims to make foldable phones, integrated with AI features, mainstream by offering a unique, differentiated experience, especially as it faces increasing competition from Chinese rivals like Huawei and Honor, and seeks to regain its global smartphone crown from Apple.
