Samsung R&D Institute Noida and IIT Madras Forge Five-Year Alliance to Advance AI in Indian Languages, HealthTech, and Generative AI

TLDR: Samsung R&D Institute, Noida (SRI-N) has signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Madras to collaborate on research in Artificial Intelligence. The partnership will focus on developing AI solutions for Indian languages, HealthTech, and emerging areas like Generative AI, aiming to strengthen Samsung’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ commitments and enhance the Galaxy AI ecosystem.

Samsung R&D Institute, Noida (SRI-N) has officially entered into a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to spearhead collaborative research in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence. This strategic alliance is set to drive advancements in critical areas including AI for Indian languages, HealthTech, and the burgeoning domain of Generative AI. The collaboration underscores Samsung’s dedication to fostering a robust innovation ecosystem in line with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ initiatives.

The partnership outlines a comprehensive framework for engagement, encompassing sponsored research projects, consultancy services, technology licensing, specialized training programs, facility development, and the sponsorship of student fellowships. These activities are designed to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world technological applications, nurturing a new generation of future-ready talent.

Kyungyun Roo, Managing Director of Samsung R&D Institute, Noida, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Our collaboration with IIT Madras marks an important step towards co-creating solutions that are meaningful, inclusive, and future-ready. Together, we aim to enhance the Galaxy AI ecosystem with deeper integration of Indian regional languages and contribute to breaking language barriers across the country. In addition, we are engaging in co-development of emerging technology and and enhancement of skill sets.”

Echoing this sentiment, Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the academic institution’s enthusiasm for the alliance. “We are proud to partner with SRI-N and this alliance will sponsor revolutionary research and technological development through effective utilization of AI technology. In the fast-changing tech landscape, the MoU will upskill beneficiaries to develop strong connection between theoretical knowledge and practical industry solutions required to mitigate risks and address uncertainty,” he remarked.

This partnership is a continuation of SRI-Noida’s expanding network of academic collaborations, which already includes long-term MoUs with other premier Indian institutes such as IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, and IIT Ropar. These engagements collectively aim to chart an expansive roadmap towards a smarter, more connected world by blending industry-scale resources with academic excellence.

The focus on AI for Indian languages is particularly pertinent given India’s linguistic diversity, with over 22 official languages and hundreds of dialects. Developing AI solutions tailored for this local audience promises to significantly enhance ease of use for businesses and individuals, enabling seamless customer support, live translation, and the creation of advanced literacy and healthcare accessibility tools.
