India Grapples with Rising AI-Powered Deepfake Scams: From Celebrity Impersonations to Financial Fraud

TLDR: Indians are increasingly falling victim to sophisticated AI-powered deepfake scams, which have evolved beyond celebrity impersonations to include banking fraud, misinformation campaigns, and enterprise risks. Recent cases involving Bollywood celebrities seeking legal protection highlight the urgency of the issue. A 2024 McAfee survey indicates widespread exposure to deepfake content and a significant number of victims of deepfake shopping scams, underscoring the need for technology-led solutions.

India is currently facing a significant surge in AI-powered deepfake scams, with citizens increasingly becoming targets of highly sophisticated digital frauds. These scams, which leverage advanced deepfake and voice cloning technologies, are no longer limited to mere celebrity impersonations but have expanded to encompass banking fraud, the dissemination of misinformation, and various enterprise-level risks.

Recent developments in Bollywood underscore the gravity of the situation. Prominent figures such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and filmmaker Karan Johar have approached the Delhi High Court to seek legal protection for their ‘personality rights’ against the misuse of AI-generated deepfakes. These fabricated media contents, often created for commercial exploitation, have in some instances included sexually explicit or derogatory material. In response, the court has issued orders to online platforms and e-commerce websites, instructing them to immediately remove any infringing content and making it clear that such misuse will not be overlooked.

Experts warn that the scope of deepfake threats has broadened considerably. Beyond celebrity impersonations, these AI-driven frauds are now fueling banking fraud through voice or video cloning, spreading misinformation that erodes public trust in political processes and media, and creating significant enterprise risks, including insider threats and manipulated training data. The rapid spread of AI-cloned voices and deepfake videos of public figures within hours highlights the challenge.

The evolution of deepfake technology has been swift since its emergence in 2017. A 2024 McAfee survey revealed that a staggering 75 percent of Indians had encountered deepfake content in the preceding 12 months. Cyber experts project that by the first quarter of 2025, nearly all Indian internet users will have been exposed to deepfakes, given the triple-digit rise in global deepfake incidents. Alarmingly, almost half (45 percent) of Indian consumers reported that they or someone they know had fallen victim to a deepfake shopping scam, according to McAfee’s Global Festive Shopping Survey 2024. There is considerable apprehension that these numbers could further escalate during the upcoming festive season. The escalating scale and sophistication of these threats necessitate the urgent implementation of technology-led solutions to protect individuals and institutions.
