TLDR: Envision and Solos have partnered to launch the Ally Solos Glasses, an AI-powered wearable designed to assist blind and low-vision users. These smart glasses leverage multimodal AI, including models like Llama, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, to provide real-time audio cues for reading text, describing environments, identifying objects and people, and answering questions. Available for pre-order, the glasses aim to offer a seamless, hands-free experience to enhance daily life for those with sight loss.
In a significant leap forward for assistive technology, Envision, a specialist in accessibility solutions, has collaborated with smart eyewear innovator Solos to introduce the Ally Solos Glasses. These groundbreaking AI-powered smart glasses are engineered to profoundly impact the lives of blind and low-vision individuals, offering an intuitive and hands-free way to interact with the world around them.
The Ally Solos Glasses are built upon Solos’ established AirGo platform, known for its comfort, durability, and modular design. At their core, these glasses integrate Envision’s proprietary AI assistant, ‘Ally,’ which is powered by a sophisticated combination of foundational AI models, including Meta’s Llama, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Perplexity. This multimodal AI capability allows the glasses to perform a wide array of functions through audio cues delivered via built-in open-ear speakers.
Key functionalities include the ability to read text from various sources like books, signs, menus, and documents; describe surroundings, scenes, and even people; recognize objects and signs; scan documents or photos for meaningful content; answer questions; provide reminders; and engage in natural conversations, with Ally remembering context across interactions. The glasses feature 2K resolution camera sensors on the frames to process visual information, connecting seamlessly via the Ally app available on both iOS and Android devices.
According to Kenneth Fan, co-founder of Solos, the partnership underscores a shared belief in ‘the power of smart glasses to solve real-world problems while integrating seamlessly into everyday life and style.’ Karthik Mahadevan, CEO and co-founder of Envision, emphasized that with Ally on the AirGo platform, they are ‘creating a seamless, hands-free experience that understands what you need and responds naturally.’
Designed with user experience at the forefront, the Ally Solos Glasses boast a P67 rating for dust and water protection. They feature USB-C chargeable ear stems that provide up to 16 hours of active use on a single charge, with a full charge taking approximately 90 minutes, and a quick 15-minute charge yielding about three hours of battery life. The intuitive onboarding process teaches users to interact with Ally using natural language, aiming for the assistant to feel like a ‘helpful companion that is always listening but not overwhelming.’
While primarily marketed to blind and low-vision users, the glasses also offer broader utility, such as translation features and document scanning, making them versatile for a wider audience, including elderly individuals and those with cognitive impairments. The Ally Solos Glasses are currently available for pre-order at a special launch price of $399, discounted from the regular price of $699. In the UK, they can be pre-ordered for £295.31. Shipping is slated to begin in October 2025.
