Qualcomm Challenges Nvidia in AI Chip Market with New Accelerators; India Unveils ₹1-Lakh-Crore R&D Fund

TLDR: Qualcomm has launched its new AI200 and AI250 chips, directly challenging Nvidia’s dominant position in the data center AI market. Concurrently, India has announced a substantial ₹1-lakh-crore Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) Fund aimed at stimulating private sector investment in cutting-edge technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and deeptech, to foster national innovation.

In a significant move poised to reshape the artificial intelligence landscape, Qualcomm has intensified its competition with Nvidia by unveiling its new AI200 and AI250 accelerator chips. These chips are specifically designed to target Nvidia’s formidable stronghold in data-center computing, where it currently commands over 90% of the AI chip market. Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, announced the company’s strategic push into data-center AI, emphasizing that the new chips will focus on inference computing—running AI models—rather than solely on training them. The AI200 and AI250 boast an impressive 768 gigabytes of memory capacity, surpassing current offerings from both Nvidia and AMD, signaling a direct and aggressive challenge to the established leaders. The AI200 is slated for shipment in 2026, with the AI250 following in 2027. Saudi Arabia’s Humain has been named as the first customer, planning to deploy 200 megawatts worth of AI200 chips at its data centers next year, expanding a partnership initially announced during a presidential visit to Riyadh. Amon, while acknowledging the potential for ‘bubble-like hype’ in the AI sector, maintained that AI represents a ‘massive opportunity’ whose true scale will unfold over years. He stressed the importance of efficient architectures for long-term success, a sentiment that resonated with investors, as Qualcomm’s stock surged by as much as 20% following the announcement, reflecting confidence in its pivot towards data center AI infrastructure.

Simultaneously, India has taken a monumental step to bolster its innovation ecosystem with the launch of a ₹1-lakh-crore (approximately $12 billion USD) Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) Fund. Unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), this fund is designed to significantly encourage private sector investment in R&D, with a particular focus on emerging ‘sunrise’ sectors such as Artificial Intelligence and deeptech. The initiative aims to dismantle financial barriers for private enterprises, including startups, by providing long-term, low-interest loans or equity support. The fund will be channeled through a two-tier structure, utilizing special purpose and second-level fund managers like Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), Development Financial Institutions (DFIs), and Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs). This strategic investment aligns with India’s ambitious ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision, which seeks to transform the nation into a developed economy through scientific progress and innovation. The scheme will be governed by the ANRF, chaired by the Prime Minister, with an Executive Council managing implementation details and an Empowered Group of Secretaries overseeing operational decisions. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will serve as the nodal agency for ground-level execution, ensuring the fund effectively supports India’s drive for technological self-reliance and global competitiveness.
