Profluent and Corteva Partner to Advance AI-Driven Sustainable Crop Development

TLDR: Profluent Bio, a leader in generative AI for protein design, has announced a multi-year collaboration with agricultural science giant Corteva. This partnership aims to accelerate the development of sustainable and resilient crops through the application of artificial intelligence and advanced gene-editing technologies.

EMERYVILLE, Calif. – Profluent Bio, a pioneering company in generative artificial intelligence (AI) for protein design, has entered into a significant multi-year strategic collaboration with Corteva, a global leader in agricultural sciences and solutions. The alliance is set to revolutionize crop development by leveraging AI and gene-editing to create a new generation of more sustainable and resilient crops.

The collaboration, facilitated through Corteva’s Catalyst platform, will concentrate on designing targeted, AI-driven gene-editing solutions. These solutions will be integrated within Corteva’s industry-leading Genlytix™ ecosystem, which provides comprehensive capabilities for gene editing and its future role in plant breeding.

Profluent’s contribution includes its cutting-edge generative biology advancements, notably its foundation model, ProGen3. This model is trained on the company’s proprietary Protein Atlas, which encompasses over 80 billion protein sequences. Additionally, Profluent brings OpenCRISPR-1™, recognized as the first AI-created genome editor, to the partnership. By combining Profluent’s foundational models and expertise with Corteva’s extensive global research and development capabilities, the companies aim to expedite the creation of a versatile toolkit for innovative crop engineering.

The primary objective of this partnership is to enhance critical agricultural traits such as improving crop yield, bolstering resistance to pests, and increasing tolerance to environmental stressors like drought and heat, while also improving overall quality.

Ali Madani, CEO of Profluent Bio, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “This partnership shows the broad applicability of our AI design platform in generating functional biological sequences across industries. We’re thrilled to collaborate with Corteva, one of the world’s foremost agricultural innovators, whose leadership in plant science and field validation ensures advanced technologies make a real difference in agriculture. Our work with Corteva signals the abundance of opportunities ahead as AI unlocks breakthrough solutions to real challenges in biology.”
