MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is demonstrating a strong readiness for the impending wave of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, according to Ashutosh Gupta, Managing Director for Coursera India and Asia Pacific. In a recent briefing, Gupta highlighted the country’s potential to significantly benefit from AI-related changes, projecting an economic gain of approximately USD14.5 billion across various sectors, including consumer, retail, hospitality, financial, manufacturing, education, and professional services.
Gupta emphasized the critical need for upskilling the workforce, citing a January 2025 jobs report from the World Economic Forum which indicates that around 38 percent of key skills in the Philippines are expected to change over the next five years. This necessitates a concerted effort from both the government and private companies to equip their personnel with the necessary competencies to navigate technological advancements.
He lauded the Philippine government’s proactive stance, noting its inclusion of policies for AI adoption in its development plan, which demonstrates a strong response to continuous technological innovation. Gupta underscored the importance of maintaining a dynamic and updated technological infrastructure to address future challenges effectively.
Coursera’s own data further illustrates the Philippines’ engagement with online learning, particularly in AI. Since 2019, approximately 2.9 million Filipinos have registered for various Coursera programs, marking the highest enrollment rate in Southeast Asia. Among these, a significant 125,000 enrollments are specifically for generative AI (GenAI) courses. The average age of these enrollees is 32 years old, with a near-equal gender distribution of 51 percent women and 49 percent men.
