TLDR: Perforce Software has launched an autonomous AI agent integrated into its Perfecto AI test automation platform, designed to significantly streamline mobile application testing. This new agent eliminates the need for manual test script creation and maintenance, adapting tests in real-time to application changes and enabling test generation even before code is written, promising higher efficiency and quality in DevOps workflows.
Perforce Software has introduced a groundbreaking autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) agent aimed at transforming the landscape of mobile application testing. Integrated into its existing Perfecto AI test automation platform, this new AI agent is engineered to autonomously adapt tests as mobile computing applications undergo changes, drastically reducing the traditional burden of test script creation and ongoing maintenance.
According to Don Jackson, technical evangelist for Perforce, the innovation allows DevOps teams to leverage a proprietary AI model developed by Perforce. This model facilitates the generation of tests through a natural language interface, moving beyond the need for conventional test scripts. Jackson emphasized that the AI agent makes intelligent decisions and takes actions based on the ‘artifact under test’ (AUT) to achieve objectives defined by a tester’s prompt. A significant advantage is its resilience: ‘Whenever the AUT changes, as long as the objective is still achievable through user actions, the Perforce test will not break, but look to find a new way to navigate through the AUT to achieve the test objective,’ Jackson stated. This means test cases require no programming language knowledge, specific framework reliance, or maintenance, even with application updates.
The overarching goal of this development is to minimize the extensive maintenance typically required for building and running tests that frequently break with each application update. Jackson highlighted a forward-looking capability: ‘it’s now possible to use an AI agent to create a test for an application before any of the code for it is ever written.’ Furthermore, this autonomous approach enables the automation of tests that previously could only be performed manually.
Mitch Ashley, vice president and practice lead for software lifecycle engineering at Futurum Group, commented on Perforce’s strategic move, stating that the company ‘is charting a new course in AI for software testing and and quality.’ Ashley explained that Perfecto AI operates from fundamental requirements, such as user stories, to analyze and determine optimal testing strategies. This allows the AI to select the most suitable testing tool or technique and then generate tests for that specific platform.

While AI agents are theoretically expected to simplify testing and lead to higher quality applications, the pace of AI adoption within DevOps teams remains a point of discussion. A recent Futurum Group survey indicated that 41% of respondents anticipate using generative AI tools and platforms for code generation, review, and testing. However, the industry still faces the challenge of balancing reliance on autonomous AI agents with the necessity for human review, especially given the potential for AI models to ‘hallucinate’ depending on their training.
