TLDR: OpenLaw, a San Francisco-based legal technology startup, has successfully raised $3.5 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round. The company’s AI-powered platform aims to connect individuals seeking legal services with vetted solo and small-firm attorneys, addressing the significant access-to-justice gap in the U.S. legal market.
San Francisco, CA – July 25, 2025 – OpenLaw, an innovative legal technology company, announced today the successful completion of an oversubscribed $3.5 million seed funding round. This significant investment, co-led by Flint Capital and Slauson & Co., with additional participation from The LegalTech Fund, Mindful Venture Capital, Everywhere VC, Wisdom Ventures, SQII Ventures, and Gaingels, will fuel OpenLaw’s mission to transform access to legal services across the United States.
OpenLaw’s core offering is an AI-driven platform designed to streamline the process of finding qualified legal representation. Clients initiate the process by submitting a brief description of their legal issue. The platform’s advanced algorithms then match them with pre-screened attorneys who possess the most relevant experience. These attorneys, primarily solo practitioners and small-firm lawyers, then provide customized proposals detailing pricing, availability, and their proposed legal approach. This system aims to eliminate the traditional complexities and time-consuming nature of searching for legal counsel, which often involves endless phone calls and form submissions.
Andrew Guzman, founder and CEO of OpenLaw, highlighted the personal motivation behind the company’s creation, stemming from his family’s inability to afford legal help during his youth. He later witnessed the inefficiencies from the perspective of a multi-state law firm operator. Guzman stated, ‘The legal system wasn’t designed for the majority of Americans — and it hasn’t evolved. OpenLaw fixes what’s broken — for the people who need help and the lawyers who want to provide it.’
The platform specifically targets ‘real-life’ individual legal matters such as divorce, debt collection, and criminal defense, distinguishing itself from competitors that focus on business or transactional law. Since its launch in 2024, OpenLaw has demonstrated substantial market traction, facilitating over 1,000 legal connections and onboarding more than 130 attorneys nationwide, with another 300 on a waitlist. The company reports that clients can experience a 30-70% reduction in legal fees and find representation in hours rather than weeks, all at no cost to the client. For attorneys, OpenLaw significantly reduces client intake time by 75% and decreases client acquisition costs by 66%.

This funding will enable OpenLaw to expand its presence into new key markets, including New York, California, and Arizona, and further enhance its AI infrastructure. The company’s innovative approach is poised to address the critical access-to-justice problem in the U.S., where an estimated 92% of low-income Americans lack adequate legal representation in civil matters.
