The funding round was co-led by prominent venture capital firms Google Ventures and Kleiner Perkins, with continued investment from Series A leader Sequoia Capital, and additional participation from Coatue, Conviction, and Thrive, bringing OpenEvidence’s total funding to over $300 million.
DeepConsult is described as the first AI agent specifically designed for physicians, providing access to PhD-level, medically-specialized AI capabilities. These agents are capable of autonomously conducting advanced medical research, analyzing, and cross-referencing hundreds of peer-reviewed medical studies in parallel. A notable aspect of this launch is OpenEvidence’s commitment to offering DeepConsult entirely free to all verified U.S. clinicians, irrespective of their institutional affiliation or workplace.
The introduction of DeepConsult directly addresses the escalating challenge of information overload in healthcare. With the volume of medical research doubling approximately every five years, clinicians frequently struggle with outdated and fragmented traditional databases that demand extensive manual searching. OpenEvidence aims to streamline this process, enabling clinicians to “search once, skip the scavenger hunt, and surface the science in seconds,” delivering point-of-care answers grounded in the latest research through strategic content partnerships with esteemed institutions like the American Medical Association (JAMA) and The New England Journal of Medicine.
OpenEvidence has demonstrated remarkable growth, currently operating across more than 10,000 hospitals and medical centers throughout the U.S. The platform is utilized by over 40% of American physicians who log in daily, with approximately 65,000 new verified U.S. clinician registrations occurring each month. The platform’s usage has seen an exponential increase, surging from 358,000 logged-in, verified U.S. physician consultations in July 2024 to handling the same volume each workday. This now translates to over 8.5 million clinical consultations per month by logged-in, verified U.S. physicians, marking a staggering 2,000%+ year-over-year growth rate.
Further solidifying its position in medical AI, OpenEvidence recently made history by becoming the first AI to score a perfect 100% on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). This achievement, the result of a six-month effort to evolve its core AI models, showcases the platform’s advanced reasoning and knowledge capabilities, extending beyond mere accurate answers to also teach the rationale behind each response, complete with references from gold-standard medical sources.
