TLDR: OpenAI has launched a new Developer Mode for ChatGPT, granting Plus and Pro users full read and write access to Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools. This significant update transforms ChatGPT from a conversational assistant into a powerful AI-powered workflow engine, allowing direct interaction with external systems for tasks like updating records and triggering automations.
OpenAI has rolled out a groundbreaking Developer Mode for ChatGPT, a beta feature that significantly expands the capabilities of its popular AI model. Announced around September 10-11, 2025, this new mode provides Plus and Pro users with comprehensive support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), including both read and write functionalities. Previously, MCP integrations within ChatGPT were largely limited to read-only operations, such as searching and fetching data from connected sources.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard initially introduced by Anthropic in late 2024, serves as a universal interface for AI applications to connect with external data and tools. It functions much like a ‘USB-C port for AI,’ standardizing how models interact with various services without requiring custom integrations for each. Major players, including OpenAI and Google DeepMind, have adopted this protocol.
With Developer Mode enabled, ChatGPT can now perform ‘write actions,’ meaning developers can directly update external systems, trigger complex workflows, and chain automations from within a chat conversation. This capability moves ChatGPT beyond being merely an intelligent query layer to a true automation platform. Examples of potential applications include updating Jira tickets, initiating Zapier workflows, managing calendars, sending invoices via platforms like Stripe, and updating CRM records directly through natural language commands.
Enabling Developer Mode is straightforward for eligible Plus and Pro web users. It can be activated by navigating to ‘Settings → Connectors → Advanced Settings → Developer Mode.’ Once toggled on, the border around the chat input field changes to orange, serving as a visual warning that the powerful—and potentially risky—mode is active. Developers can then add remote MCP servers by providing their URLs, which must support Server-Sent Events (SSE) or streaming HTTP, and configure authentication (e.g., OAuth).
OpenAI emphasizes that Developer Mode, while powerful, comes with inherent risks. These include prompt injection vulnerabilities, unintended write operations, and the potential for dangerous tool execution. A compromised MCP server could access or alter user data, and any write action requires separate confirmation to proceed. OpenAI advises that this mode is intended for developers who possess a clear understanding of how to safely configure and test connectors.
