TLDR: OpenAI has announced that its ‘Projects’ feature, previously exclusive to paid subscribers, is now available to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free tier. This move aims to enhance user organization and productivity by allowing the grouping of conversations, custom instructions, and file uploads within dedicated workspaces. While free users will have some limitations, this marks a continued effort by OpenAI to democratize access to advanced AI functionalities.
OpenAI has officially rolled out its ‘Projects’ feature to all ChatGPT users, a significant update that brings advanced organizational tools to its free-tier audience. This functionality, which debuted in December 2024 for paid subscribers, transforms ChatGPT into a more robust digital workspace by enabling users to group related conversations, set custom instructions, and upload reference files for specific tasks. The announcement, made around early September 2025, underscores OpenAI’s strategy to broaden access to its powerful AI capabilities.
At its core, ChatGPT Projects function like intelligent folders, allowing users to maintain context and consistency across multiple interactions with the AI assistant. For instance, a user can create a project for ‘Marketing Launch Plan,’ define a specific tone or persona for the AI, and attach relevant documents. This ensures that all subsequent chats within that project adhere to the established guidelines and reference the provided materials, streamlining workflows for tasks such as research, content drafting, or study guide creation.
While the Projects feature is now universally accessible, there are distinctions in its implementation across OpenAI’s subscription tiers. Free users will be able to upload up to five files per project. In contrast, ChatGPT Plus subscribers, priced at $20 per month, can upload up to 25 files, and those on the ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, costing $200 per month for Pro, will have a generous limit of 40 files per project. All users, regardless of their plan, will also gain the ability to customize their projects with unique colors and icons, further enhancing organization and personalization.
This initiative is part of a broader trend by OpenAI to gradually introduce formerly premium features to its free user base. Over the past few years, the company has made tools like Deep Research and ChatGPT Voice, initially exclusive to paid subscribers, available to everyone. Similarly, the recently released GPT-5 model is accessible to all users, albeit with stricter usage limits for free accounts. This approach serves a dual purpose: to provide substantial utility to a wider audience and to incentivize free users to upgrade to paid plans for expanded capabilities and fewer restrictions.
